Last Season

The teams split. In Week 4 in Minnesota, the Lions won 14-7. Anthony Zettel led a stellar performance by Detroit’s defense with two sacks, four hurries and a fumble recovery, as the Lions forced three turnovers while holding Minnesota scoreless in the second half. The Lions turned two fumbles lost by the Vikings in the third quarter into 11 points, taking the lead on Ameer Abdullah’s 1-yard touchdown run. The Vikings had only 120 yards in the second half.

 

In Detroit on Thanksgiving, the Vikings won 30-23. Case Keenum threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score in the first half – he’s now with Denver. Keenum was 21 of 30 for 282 yards with both TD passes going to Kyle Rudolph, giving the Vikings a 20-3 lead late in the second quarter. The Lions rallied to pull within four points early in the fourth quarter on Matt Stafford’s second TD pass to Marvin Jones but couldn’t get closer.

 

The Vikings are 72-39-2 all-time against the Lions, and the teams have never met in postseason play. The 113 total matchups are the third-most against an opponent in Vikings franchise history. The Vikings have only played Green Bay and Chicago more times.

 

Why Bet on Detroit?

Not a great few days for the Lions. They lost 28-14 at home to Seattle on Sunday and then traded top receiver Golden Tate to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Against the Seahawks, the Lions were outscored 21-0 in the third and allowed Russell Wilson to have a perfect QB rating.

 

Matthew Stafford completed 27-of-40 passes for 310 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Stafford also lost a fumble. Attempting to climb the pocket, the ball got knocked out from behind. Stafford’s pick was an awful decision in the red zone, though the game was already in hand for the Seahawks. Marvin Jones caught 7-of-10 targets for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Jones also drew a 56-yard defensive pass interference penalty. Kerryon Johnson rushed eight times for 22 yards in the Lions’ Week 8 loss, adding six receptions for 69 additional yards.

 

As for Tate, he was one of the top receivers in franchise history. He leaves seventh in team history in receiving yards (4,741), fifth in receptions (416) and 15th in receiving touchdowns (22), and he was the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions per game with 5.9 — half a reception more per game than his running mate in the Lions’ receiving corps his first two years with the club, Calvin Johnson.

 

Detroit got a 2019 third-round pick from the Eagles for a guy who was going to be a free agent. Pretty solid return. But trading the franchise’s most consistent receiver and a sure-handed option for Stafford, it changes the dynamic of the offense. It also puts a lot of pressure on who replaces Tate, either veteran TJ Jones or rookie Brandon Powell, who was active for the first time Sunday primarily as a returner.

 

Why Bet on Minnesota?

The Vikings were stunned Sunday at home 30-20 by the Saints. Two turnovers were a killer. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 31 of 41 passes (75.6 percent) for 359 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against the Saints. He had a passer rating of 107.7 and was sacked four times. Cousins’ lone interception was a costly one as it was returned for a touchdown by New Orleans.

 

The Vikings tallied 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground on 22 carries against the NFL’s top rushing defense. Adam Thielen recorded nine catches for 103 yards and a score but did have a fumble in the red zone. He had a touchdown catch for the fifth straight game. Thielen also eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the eighth straight game, which is a record to open a season and tied the overall streak of eight games along with former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

 

Lions vs Vikings is going to be a close one.

 

The Vikings fared well on Sunday night, holding the Saints to their season-low in both total yards (270) and passing yards (164). The Vikings were without linebacker Anthony Barr, cornerback Xavier Rhodes, and safety Andrew Sendejo, but defensive end Everson Griffen made his return to the field after a five-game absence.

 

Thielen leads the NFL with 74 receptions – the most by a player in his team’s first eight games of a season in NFL history. Thielen, who has a league-leading 925 receiving yards, can become the second player in NFL history with at least 75 catches and 1,000 receiving yards in his team’s first nine games of a season, joining Atlanta’s Julio Jones (80 catches and 1,029 receiving yards in 2015).
