NFL Preseason Week 3  Results

Philadelphia (2-1) beat Miami 38-31 last Thursday. Carson Wentz threw touchdown passes to both of his new receivers, and Mychal Kendricks returned an interception 31 yards for a score. Wentz connected with Torrey Smith on a 50-yard TD down the right side on a third-and- 8 on Philadelphia’s opening series. Smith, who was signed along with Alshon Jeffery in free agency to bolster the receiving group, didn’t have a catch in the first two games. Wentz then hit Jeffery for a 20-yard gain and found him again for a 15-yard TD pass over the middle on his fourth and final series. Wentz finished 6 of 10 for 129 yards, two TDs and one interception. The Jets (1-2) lost at the Giants 32-31 on Saturday. After failing to score a touchdown in their first two preseason games, the Giants got three in the first half against the Jets in opening a 29-3 lead. The Jets had a chance, though, to win after starter Christian Hackenberg took over for an injured Bryce Petty with 2:00 to play and finished off a 75-yard touchdown drive with a 17-yard pass to Frankie Hammond with 1:26 left. Coach Todd Bowles went for the win, but the Giants stopped a 2-point run by rookie Elijah McGuire. Hackenberg finished 12 of 21 for 126 yards.

McCown Wins Jets Job

To no surprise, Jets coach Todd Bowles has named veteran journeyman Josh McCown as his Week 1 starting QB. McCown will be the Jets’ fourth Week 1 starter in the past six years, following Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick. McCown, 38, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract to serve as the bridge quarterback, landed the job even though he has played only one series in the preseason — the first drive of the opener. Hackenberg went into training camp as the biggest threat to McCown, but the 2016 second-round pick played poorly in extensive action with the starters. He was outplayed by Petty, but Petty got injured. Petty (15-for-18, 250 yards) stole the night, throwing three touchdown passes in the second half, but he injured his left knee with two minutes remaining in the game of his NFL life. He was the first Jets’ quarterback since Ray Lucas (2000) to have three TD passes in a preseason game. Petty, diagnosed with a minor knee sprain, is expected to be available for the season opener. Hackenberg has had two starts and a long relief appearance this preseason, and his offense has surrendered more points (16) than it scored (nine).

Eagles Backup Job

There’s obviously no question that Wentz is Philly’s starting QB. What about No. 2? Nick Foles was brought in to be the backup but he hasn’t seen the field at all this preseason. He’s been nursing an elbow injury, which sidelined him thus far. Eagles coach Doug Pederson expects Foles to be ready for Week 1. Matt McGloin has thrown the most passes of any of the quarterbacks this preseason, including Wentz. McGloin has attempted 88 total passes and has completed 62 of them. At running back, how the Eagles split up carries this season is anyone’s guess. But the main three ball-carriers, in some order, will likely be LeGarrette Blount, Wendell Smallwood, and Darren Sproles. If the Eagles keep a fourth running back on the roster, it seems likely to come down to Donnel Pumphrey versus Corey Clement. It’s hard to imagine the Eagles cutting Pumphrey after trading up in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft to pick him. The Eagles and Jets made a trade this week, swapping a pair of 2014 third-round defensive backs as the Jets acquired safety Terrence Brooks and the Eagles obtained cornerback Dexter McDougle. The Jets were looking for a No. 3 safety after losing Doug Middleton recently to a torn pectoral muscle. They also could be without backup Rontez Miles, who suffered an eye laceration last week and is out indefinitely. McDougle was having his best training camp with the Jets, who drafted him 80th overall, but he was on the roster bubble. His career has been hampered by injuries.
