The contest will mark the 45th all-time regular season meeting between the teams, with Indianapolis leading the series, 31-13. The Colts have won the last 11 matchups dating back to the 2011 season. Last season, Indy won 34-26 in Nashville. Andrew Luck threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle with 1:55 left to put Indianapolis ahead to stay. Marcus Mariota had a chance to rally the Titans, but T.Y. McGill sacked him and stripped out the ball. Robert Mathis picked it up and ran 14 yards for the clinching TD with 1:47 left. At Indianapolis, the Colts won 24-17. Why Bet On Indianapolis?
The Colts have yet to have Luck this season off shoulder surgery and he’s not playing here. Probably not next week, either, and maybe not until Week 9 in early November. He just recently started practicing with the team, albeit on a limited basis. Indy (2-3) beat San Francisco 26-23 last week and future Hall of Famer kicker Adam Vinatieri was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for an NFL-record 17th time in his career. Vinatieri was 4-for-4 on field goals, including the 51-yard game winner in overtime, against San Francisco. The 44-year-old Vinatieri has made an NFL-record 10 game-winning kicks in overtime. Only two players older than Vinatieri scored an overtime game-winner, whether a TD or FG, in the regular-season or the playoffs: George Blanda (twice at age 48) and Morten Andersen (46). QB Jacoby Brissett led the Colts on a long opening drive in overtime but threw an interception deep in San Francisco territory. The Indianapolis defense forced the 49ers to punt on the ensuing possession. Brissett would redeem himself on the next series as he led the team into field goal range. T.Y. Hilton caught seven passes for 177 yards, the highest total by an Indianapolis receiver since Hilton’s 223-yard performance at Houston in 2014. Brissett passed for a career-high 314 yards and scored his third touchdown in his last three games. Marlon Mack, the team’s fourth-round draft pick and heir apparent to Frank Gore, took a handoff and ran 35 yards around the edge to put the Colts in field goal position. Why Bet On Tennessee?
The Titans lost 16-10 last week without injured starting QB Marcus Mariota as the offense managed just 188 yards behind lousy backup Matt Cassel. The Titans’ total offensive yards were their lowest output since their 2013 season finale. They averaged 3.2 yards per play and went 2-of-13 on third downs. They wasted a great performance by the defense, which allowed just 178 total yards. Cassel looked hesitant and weak-armed as the Dolphins showed no fear when he dropped back to pass. He finished 21-of-32 for 141 yards and the second-half touchdown. It was a mix of checkdowns and intermediate throws. He also was the primary reason for the Titans’ six sacks, frequently holding the ball too long. Six quarters into the 2017 Cassel experiment, it’s clear the Titans didn’t properly address the backup quarterback position. Why didn’t the team sign Colin Kaepernick?
So will Mariota play here? He’s likely to be a game-time call with a hamstring strain suffered in Week 4 vs. Houston. The Titans won’t risk their franchise player, but Coach Mike Mularkey says he feels good about Mariota’s chances – the extra day of rest should help. Left tackle Taylor Lewan suffered a knee injury in the Titans’ loss to the Dolphins and is questionable. And MRI was negative.
One bright spot for the Titans thus far has been the tight end position. Delanie Walker (21 catches), Jonnu Smith (eight catches) and Phillip Supernaw (three catches) have combined for 32 receptions, a tight-end total that trails only Kansas City (34) and Baltimore (33) in the AFC. Smith (two touchdown catches) and Supernaw (one touchdown catch) have accounted for three of the Titans’ four receiving touchdowns through five games. Walker added a rushing touchdown on an end around.
