Since the first game in 1993, the annual Valero Alamo Bowl has hosted 22 bowl games and 9 neutral site games at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The game showcases two of the premier conferences in the country, featuring the #1 Pac-12 team against the #1 Big 12 team after the College Football Playoff selections.

The Alamo Bowl is also known for producing eight of the top 20 most-watched bowl games in ESPN history, although, it also in the record books due to a curious incident happened in 2005. The 2005 Alamo Bowl between Nebraska and Michigan ended in what is described as one of the most controversial plays in bowl game history. With 4:29 left in the game, Nebraska took a 32–28 lead. Michigan made a last attempt to win the game on a seven-lateral scramble. Because the ball had hit the ground, several members of both teams and the media, believing the play was dead, rushed onto the field while a Michigan player ran downfield. Nebraska players also gave their coach the Gatorade dunk before the play was over, and no flags were thrown on the play despite the entrance of Nebraska coaches onto the field.

Two high-octane offenses will be looking to put a bushel of points on the scoreboard when the Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-3, 7-2 in Big 12) face the Colorado Buffaloes (10-3, 8-1 in Pac-12) in the 2016 edition of the game.

Oklahoma State had an interesting season interesting one. The team had to deal with early losses to Central Michigan (Week 2) and Baylor (Week 4). Although, OSU was able to rebound and claim the victory in its next seven games before falling to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Conference Championship game.

The Colorado Buffaloes are one of the biggest surprises in the league, clinching the PAC-12 South division and recording their best season since 2002. Colorado suffered a loss to USC on Oct. 8 before mounting a six-game streak. Although, Colorado lost to the Washington Huskies in the PAC-12 Championship game
