Established in 2002 by Raycom Sports, the Charlotte based Belk Bowl was previously known as the Continental Tire Bowl (2002–2004) and the Meineke Car Care Bowl (2005–2010). Staging a major bowl game in Charlotte was not possible prior to 1996, as a large, first-class venue was not available in the city. That changed with the opening of the Bank of America Stadium, home to the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.

The inaugural Belk Bowl took place in 2002 and was previously called the Meineke Car Care Center Bowl and the Continental Tire Bowl before Belk obtained the lead sponsorship rights in 2011.

The game originally featured a matchup between the #5 selected Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team and the #3 selected American Athletic Conference (AAC) . On Sunday, December 8, Virginia and West Virginia officially accepted invitations to play in the inaugural game, pitting the No. 2 team from the ACC against the No. 2 team from the Big East. The Cavaliers ended up beating the Mountaineers 48-22.

Since then, favorites have won and covered the college football betting line in five consecutive games with each of the last four games all being decided by double-digits, including.

In 2012, Cincinnati pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks in college football bowl game history when they scored two late touchdowns to stun Duke 48-34 to cash as nine-point favorites.

One year later, North Carolina routed Cincinnati 39-17 to cash in as a 2.5-poinr favorite while Georgia followed that up by spanking Louisville 37-14 in 2014 to cover the college football betting line as a 7-point favorite.

Last year, the Mississippi State Bulldogs jumped all over the NC State Wolfpack to win 51-28 and easily cover the spread as a 6-point favorite while the game’s 79 combined points played Over the 61.5-point O/U Total to snap a two-year Under streak
