The Camellia Bowl is an annual football bowl game first played on December 20, 2014 in Montgomery, Alabama at the Cramton Bowl. Announced in August 2013, the game is owned and managed by ESPN Regional Television (a subsidiary of ESPN) and sponsored by Raycom Media. The game pits teams from the Sun Belt Conference and the Mid-American Conference.
In 2014, Bowling Green blew a 20-7 lead to fall behind 28-27 with a minute left and immediately recaptured the lead with a game-winning 78-yard connection between James Knapke and Roger Lewis that resulted in a 33-28 victory for the Falcons. Similar fireworks between two of the nation’s most exciting conferences, the MAC and Sun Belt, should be able to up underwhelming TV ratings from 2014.
In 2015, the Ohio Bobcats represented the MAC and against Appalachian State, which played for the Sun Belt Conference. The Mountaineers endured the test of their first Bowl game in the program history, beating the Bobcats 31-29 in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The Appalachian St. Mountaineers (9-3, 7-1 Sun Belt) will return to the Camelia Bowl in 2016, but this time they will defend their title against the Toledo Rockets, who will represent the Mid-American Conference after finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record (6-2 MAC).
