First introduced in 1997, the annual Idaho Potato Bowl was launched in part to give the Big West Conference a bowl to send its champion to; after the 1996 season. The inaugural game pitted Cincinnati and Utah State, 35–19, in the inaugural game in 1997.
The 2016 annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will get underway on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7:00 PM ET, live from Boise State University’s Albertsons Stadium. The annual postseason matchup will features a Mountain West team versus an opponent from the Mid-American Conference for the fourth consecutive year and will air live on ESPN.
The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl began in 1997 and was previously known as the Humanitarian Bowl and MPC Computers Bowl. Last year Akron squeaked past Utah State 23-21 to cover the spread as a 7.5-point underdog while the game’s final score played Under the 44.5-point Over/Under total.
Prior to last season’s win, the Mountain West Conference had won three straight with each win coming by double digits. The Underdog-Over combination has been the most frequent outcome in this bowl game’s history cashing seven times with the last time coming in San Diego State’s 49-24 win over Buffalo in 2013.
