Previously known as the Emerald Bowl & Fight Hunger Bowl, the Foster Farms Bowl has been played annually since 2002. The game is currently sponsored by the Foster Farms poultry company. It was previously known as the Fight Hunger Bowl in 2013, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl from 2010 to 2012 due to its sponsorship by Kraft Foods, as the Emerald Bowl from 2004 to 2009, and as the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl from 2002 to 2003, in recognition of the corporate title sponsor, Diamond Foods.
The Fight Hunger Bowl had a contract to host the Pac-12’s sixth-place team during the 2010 through 2013 seasons, but beginning with the 2014 season, teams come from the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences. From 2002 to 2013, the annual game was played at the AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, but starting in 2014, the game was relocated to the Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, in Santa Clara, California.
On July 12, 2016, the San Francisco 49ers NFL team announced that it had taken over management of the Foster Farms Bowl from the San Francisco Bowl Game Association, and also announced a new, four-year broadcast rights deal with Fox Sports (replacing ESPN)
The Underdog in this perennial postseason affair has covered the spread in seven of the first nine bowl games while winning three straight outright from 2003-06. .
