Originally founded to give the Western Athletic Conference an automatic bowl bid after the Fiesta Bowl, the Holiday Bowl has been played annually since 1978 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. Starting in 2014 the game pits teams coming from the Pacific-12 and Big Ten conferences.

The game has been highly significant for the BYU Cougars, who have played this Bowl more than any other team in the NCAA (11 appearances). In the inaugural game, the Navy Midshipmen came in with an 8–3 record and a Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy and then capped the remarkable season with a 23–16 comeback victory over the highly favored BYU Cougars.

In 1980 the Cougars returned to the Bowl for a game was known as “The Miracle Bowl”. BYU erased a 20-point lead by SMU in the last 2 minutes of the game, tying the score on the last play of the game and winning a 46–45 over the Mustangs. In 1983 BYU rallied again against Missouri. With less than 30 seconds left, All-American quarterback Steve Young handed the ball to Eddie Stinnett. Stinnett then turned around and passed it back to Steve Young, who caught it and ran in for a touchdown, giving BYU a 21-17 win. A year later, BYU, led by their legendary coach, LaVell Edwards, won the national championship in the Holiday Bowl by defeating the University of Michigan Wolverines 24–17.

College football gaming aficionados should know that Underdogs have won each of the last four Holiday Bowls while the Under has gone 3-1 during the span. The USC Trojans have appeared in the last two Holiday Bowls.

One year ago, Wisconsin narrowly got past USC 23-21 in a tight affair to cover the college football betting line as a 4-point underdog while the game’s 44 combined points played Under the 50.5-point O/U Total.

In 2014, USC beat Nebraska 45-42 in a high-scoring affair to cash in as a 7-point underdog while the game’s final score played Over the 63-point Over/Under Total.
