Which drivers will be favored to win the French Grand Prix?
The only two drivers to have won a race this year are Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. Bottas started out hot. He took the Australian GP back on March 17. Since the victory, though, Bottas has taken only one other checkered flag. That was at the Socar Azerbaijan Grand Prix on April 28.
Hamilton has dominated this year. He won the Bahrain GP on March 31, the Chinese GP on April 14, and the Spanish Grand Prix on May 12. He’s also won the Monaco Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix, the last two F1 races.
No doubt, Hamilton will go off the big favorite to repeat as French Grand Prix winner. However, Valtteri’s car was over a second faster at the French GP Practice 2 on Friday. That gives Bottas a chance to beat his teammate at what should be better odds.
What drivers, if any, can beat either Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas for the French Grand Prix checkered flag?
Neither top Ferrari driver, Sebastian Vettel or Charles Leclerc, has won a race in 2019. Both could be due in France. Leclerc finished third behind Vettel at the Canadian Grand Prix. In last year’s French GP, Vettel finished third while Leclerc finished eighth.
Note, though, that Leclerc raced for Sauber-Ferrari. Leclerc races for Ferrari’s top team this year. He should be in a better position for the victory in 2019 than he was in 2018.
Does any racer outside of the Top 4 have a shot to win?
Max Verstappen finished fourth at the 2018 French Grand Prix. He most definitely could sneak into the Top 3 and get a podium position.
However, he’d have to race much faster than he has so far this year to win the race. If you want to take a shot on a big dog, though, Verstappen’s the dog with the best shot.
Is Mercedes a lock to be the winning team on Sunday?
That depends on how you feel about Leclerc’s and Vettel’s chances of winning the race. Only Mercedes drivers have won a Grand Prix in 2019. If the form holds, Hamilton or Bottas will take the checkered flag.
Then again, it could only be a matter of time before Ferrari takes a checkered flag. Outside of Ferrari and Mercedes, only Red Bull, Max Verstappen’s team, has a shot at winning. So, unless you believe in Verstappen, go with Mercedes or Ferrari.
