Expert Boxing Betting Picks of the Week – January 22nd

Written by on January 22, 2018

With college football finished and just one game left to play in the NFL season, the average bettor is now left looking for other sports where they can get a pretty good value to cash in. We try to cover as many of these sports as possible, which is why we are once again looking at some of the boxing betting action on tap for the coming week. All told, there are 4 big fights available for you to wager on over the next few days, and we are going to take a closer look at each of them to see how they might play out. We will start out with a fight in Nicaragua before heading to California and Latvia for the other battles. Without further ado, let’s check the latest boxing odds and get to the predictions.

Expert Boxing Betting Picks of the Week – January 22nd

Sebastian Sanchez vs. Felix Alvarado

  • Boxing Betting Odds: Sanchez +1750 / Alvarado -5250
As you can see by the odds, what we have here is what looks to be, on paper at least, a mismatched fight coming up on January 26th in Nicaragua. Alvarado is the solid favorite, which is no real surprise given that he has now won 12 straight fights, not to mention the fact that he is also fighting in his home country. He is 30-2 overall, with 26 of those victories coming via KO. Alvarado may be small in stature, but he has a ton of power in his punches. Sanchez is on the slide after losing each of his last 3 fights, taking his overall record to 12-4. This should be an easy one for Alvarado, and I like him to finish it in the early rounds.

Tewa Kiram vs. Lucas Matthysse

  • Boxing Betting Odds: Kiram +800 / Matthysse -1200
The WBO Welterweight title is vacant, and by the end of Saturday night, January 27th, one of these two fighters will be wearing the belt. Matthysse comes in as the obvious favorite, as he is a former world title challenger who has a career record of 38-4, with 35 of his wins coming via KO. Given that record, it goes without saying that this guy packs a lot of power in his punches. Matthysse has fallen short in two previous title attempts and will have a tough challenge on his hands against undefeated Tewa Kiram. While his record is solid, this will be the first real challenge that Kiram has faced, and I believe he will come up short.

Mercita Gesta vs. Jorge Linares

  • Boxing Betting Odds: Gesta +2500 / Linares -5000
Also on tap for Saturday night in Inglewood, California is a 12-round lightweight battle between Mercita Gesta and Jorge Linares. It will be Linares who is making his 3rd defense of his HBO title in this one, and it has to be said that this is a fight that he should win handily. Jorge Linares should be one of your Boxing Betting Picks of the Week. Gesta is certainly a talented fighter, but he is only ranked at #14 in the division, making some question why he is being given the title shot against the aging champ. Yes, Linares is getting up there in years, but his big fight experience and obvious skill set should get him through this one.

Oleksandr Usyk vs. Mairis Breidis

  • Boxing Betting Odds: Usyk -800 / Breidis +550
The WBC Cruiserweight title is on the line in Riga, Latvia on Saturday, with Oleksandr Usky and Mairis Breidis set to go toe to toe for 12 rounds. Usyk comes into this one with an unbeaten 13-0 record, with 11 of those wins coming via KO. Breidis has home field advantage here, as the majority of his 23 fights have taken place there. Breidis is unbeaten in those 23, winning 18 by KO. This should be a good one that might well go the distance, and I have Usyk by unanimous decision.
