Top Boxing Betting Picks of the Week – June 19th

WBC, WBO World Female Middleweight Title

  • When: Friday, June 22, 2018
  • Where: Masonic Temple, Detroit, MI
  • TV: Showtime
Christina Hammer -3500 vs. Tori Nelson +1200 Christina Hammer (22-0) and Tori Nelson (17-1-3) are set to stage an epic bout on fight Friday at the Masonic Temple for the World Boxing Council World Female Middleweight Title. The 27-year-old Hammer is unbeaten in 22 professional bouts including her third fight since 2017. Hammer beat Ghana native Gifty Amanua Ankrah via a fourth-round KO in November and has recorded 10 of her career wins via KO. Hammer has been a world champion since she won the WBO middleweight title way back in 2010. The good-looking German who stands at 5’11” and has an orthodox stance, even though she’s more of a counterpuncher than an attacker. Tori Nelson is a lot older at 41 years of age, but the 5’6 ½” Virginia native can throw down with anyone. She comes into this bout off a unanimous decision loss against Claressa Shields in January that denied her of the IBF super middleweight and WBC middleweight titles. Still, Nelson is a brawler that has never been dropped in her career before and she’s got plenty of motivation after suffering her first career loss.

Prediction

Tori Nelson wants to take the fight to you while Christina Hammer prefers to counterpunch and wait for an opening that she generally finds. However, I just don’t think that Hammer has fought a fighter the caliber of Nelson or one with the simplemindedness determination that has allowed her to never be knocked down before. The smart pick here is for Hammer as a huge favorite, but I’m going the other way with my pick here as I fully believe that Tori Nelson is capable of – and will get – the huge upset win in the biggest fight of her career. The odds say Nelson is a huge underdog, but I beg to differ. Pick: Tori Nelson via Eighth Round KO

Vacant IBF, WBA World Female Middleweight Title

  • When: Friday, June 22, 2018
  • Where: Masonic Temple, Detroit, MI
  • TV: Showtime
Claressa Shields -5000 vs. Hanna Gabriels +1400 Claressa Shields has only had five professional fights in her career, but she’s an unblemished 5-0 with two knockouts. The 5’8” 23-year-old American fights out of an orthodox stance and throws every punch with the intent to hurt her opponent. The WBC silver super middleweight and IBF super middleweight champ will be dropping down to middleweight for this fight in hopes of earning titles in three different weight classes. The Michigan native is an athletic fighter with a bunch of power. Hanna Gabriels is not the Boxing Betting favorite against Claressa Shields. 35-year-old Costa Rican Hanna Gabriels (18-1-1) has recorded 11 knockouts in her career and comes into this bout riding a five-match winning streak that includes a unanimous decision win over Oxandia Castillo in October that gave her the WBA and WBO super welterweight titles. The 5’7” superstar has an orthodox stance and hasn’t lost a fight since her 2013 meeting against Castillo. This will be Gabriels’ first career fight in the United States.

Prediction

I really like the way Hanna Gabriels fights. She moves well, she’s got decent power and plenty of experience. Having said that, I’m just not going to lie. When I watch Claressa Shields, she freaking scared me – through a television screen! Shields just ‘looks’ scary when you watch her fight and after a while, you realize that her opponent is in trouble, like serious trouble! While Gabriels is clearly skilled and almost certainly won’t down easily, I do expect her to go down at some point. Shields is the pick to get the win in this intriguing title bout, via third round TKO. Pick: Claressa Shields vis Third Round TKO
