With the PGA Tour season rolling right along and heading to Florida for its annual ‘fifth major’ it’s time to take a look at the professional golf betting odds to win the 2018 Players Championship and offer up some expert analysis and accompanying picks on just who could win this year’s prestigious tournament.

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Justin Thomas and Jordan Speith are all 14-1 co-favorites at TPC Sawgrass this week followed closely by World No.1 Dustin Johnson at 16-1. Rickie Fowler (20-1) and John Rahm (22-1) are next on the odds list with Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey and Sergio Garcia all being 28-1 picks to win it all. The field for the 2018 Players Championship features all 50 of the top 50 players in the world.

“Obviously The Players is such a huge event,” said Wells Fargo Championship winner Jason Day. “It feels like a major to me, and I’m sure it feels like a major to most guys.”

The Course

Opened in 1980, TPC Sawgrass is a par-72 that is 7,189 yards in length and is one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. It was designed by the legendary Pete and Alice Dye. The course record for 18 holes is 63 and was achieved by six players with Jason Day and Colt Knox being the most recent players to accomplish the feat, both in 2016. TPC Sawgrass is known for its famed 17th hole, known as ‘The Island Green.’

South Korea’s Kim Si-woo won the 2017 TCP by three strokes over Louis Oosthuizen and Ian Poulter. It measures only 137 yards from tee to green and features a 78-foot-long green with a tiny bunker in front of it.

Okay, let’s take a look at some of my top selections to win the 2018 Players Championship from favorites to contenders and longshots.

Last 10 Winners

  • 2017: Kim Si-woo
  • 2016: Jason Day
  • 2015: Rickie Fowler
  • 2014: Martin Kaymer
  • 2013: Tiger Woods
  • 2012: Matt Kuchar
  • 2011: K.J. Choi
  • 2010: Tim Clark
  • 2009: Henrik Stenson
  • 2008: Sergio García

The Favorites

  • Rory McIlroy 14-1
  • Jason Day 14-1
  • Jordan Spieth 14-1
  • Justin Thomas 14-1

After a top-five finish in 2014, Jordan Spieth has missed the cut each of the last three times he’s appeared here. Jason Day won The Player’s Championship in 2016, making him the ‘real favorite’ here for me. Then again, no golfer in the history of this tournament has successfully defended their title, so maybe your money would be better spent by backing Rory McIlroy or Justin Thomas.

  • Dustin Johnson 16-1
  • Rickie Fowler: 20-1
  • Jon Rahm: 22-1
  • Justin Rose: 28-1
  • Henrik Stenson: 28-1
  • Paul Casey: 28-1
  • Sergio Garcia: 28-1

Dustin Johnson is hanging on to his World No. 1 ranking by a thread right now. Four players behind him – Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose – have a mathematical chance this week at The Players Championship to replace Johnson atop the world ranking.

Spieth didn’t even know it.

”Am I one of them?” he asked Tuesday. ”Sweet.

Could sheer desperation motivate Johnson to get the win?

Big Games – Great Golf Betting Odds

  • Patrick Reed: 33-1
  • Phil Mickelson: 33-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 33-1
  • Tiger Woods: 35-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 40-1

I have no idea why Patrick Reed – or Tiger Woods – isn’t a bit higher up on the odds board.

Tiger Woods is not one of the Golf Betting favorites to win the 2018 Players Championship.

Reed has played fantastic golf all year, including at his career-defining Master Win while Wood has won this event twice (2001, 2013).

The Darkhorse

  • Matt Kuchar 66-1

Kuchar won the TPC in 2012 and could be due for a win after a trio of top 30 finishes in three of his last four tournaments, including his last outing at the Zürich Classic of New Orleans.
