With the start of the 2018 Kentucky Derby just over three days away, both, casual and experienced horse racing betting fans are gearing up to wager on the annual Run for the Roses. If you’d like to make a knowledgeable wager on this year’s version of “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” then you need some expert Kentucky Derby odds analysis that can help you increase your chances of cashing in.

Thankfully, I’ve got you covered. The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday of May and this year, that will be on Saturday, May 5. As a side note, one day earlier, the annual Kentucky Oaks race for 3-year-old fillies (female horses) also goes down live from Churchill Downs.

How to Bet on the 2018 Kentucky Derby Odds & Expert Pick

  • When: Saturday, May 5, 6:46 PM ET
  • Where: Churchill Downs Race Track, Louisville, Kentucky

The post time for this year’s Kentucky Derby is set for 6:34 PM ET, but the race isn’t set to start until 12 minutes later at 6:46 PM ET. Remember, it’s always better to tune in early since the race lasts just about two minutes. There will be 20 horses in this year’s field, with $2 million as the winning prize.

  • Good Magic (12-1)
  • Audible (8-1)
  • Vino Rosso (12-1)
  • Enticed (30-1)
  • Noble Indy (30-1)
  • My Boy Jack (30-1)
  • Solomini (30-1)

Analyzing the Favorites

Justify

  • Trainer: Bob Baffert
  • Jockey: Mike Smith

A sire of Scat Daddy, Justify is the prohibitive favorite for the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby. After going unbeaten as a 3-year-old.

Trained by the the legendary Bob Baffert, Justify looked every bit the part of a favorite in beating No. 3 favorite Bolt d’Oro by three lengths at the Santa Anita Derby.

Justify, who will run from the seventh post, will need to overcome the “The Curse of Apollo” in order to make history as the first derby winner to not race as a 2-year-old.

Magnum Moon

  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Jockey: Luis Saez

The son of Malibu Moon won the Arkansas Derby this year, but never ran as a 2-year-old, so he’ll also have to overcome that curse thing while running out of the 16th post.

Bolt d’Oro

  • Trainer: Mick Ruiz
  • Jockey: Victor Espinoza

I’m thinking Bolt d’Oro is overrated even though he won the San Felipe via disqualification. He never became a threat to Justify at Santa Anita Derby and will run out of the 11th post in the derby.

Mendelssohn

  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
  • Jockey: Ryan Moore

Running out of the 14th post, Mendelssohn won the UAE Derby by a whopping 18 1/2 lengths. However, no Derby horse has finished in the money after winning in Dubai.

Mendelssohn is one of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Odds favorites to win.

Good Magic

  • Trainer: Chad Brown
  • Jockey: Jose Ortiz

The 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner also won the Bluegrass Stakes, but it should be known that the Bluegrass winner hasn’t won the Derby since 1991.

My Boy Jack

  • Trainer: Keith Desormeaux
  • Jockey: Ken Desormeaux

My Boy Jack is the most experienced horse in the field with 10 starts and five of those being graded stakes. You should know that this thoroughbred finished in the top three eight times and will run out of the 10th post.

Final Expert Prediction

I’m keeping it simple by going with Justify for the win since he’s unbeaten as a 3-year-old in three races. I like Good Magic for second place, and My Boy Jack as my top longshot pick at the Kentucky Derby Odds to finish in the money!

  • 1. Justify
  • 2. Good Magic
  • 3. My Boy Jack
