Churchill Downs Picks for Saturday, June 27

Race 8 – 4:43pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $100,000 G3 Bashford Manor Stakes

Steve Asmussen trained Cazadero looks like a stand out. The 2-year-old Street Sense sired colt broke his maiden at first asking. Street Sense won the 2007 Kentucky Derby. Don’t think for a moment that horses can’t pass on an affinity for liking a specific racetrack. The way that Cazadero broke his maiden, by 8 ¾ lengths while jogging over Churchill’s dirt, suggests he dominates his competitors on Saturday.

Like Cazadero, Herd Immunity broke his maiden at first asking. The problem? He ran super slow to do it. But before we discount this one’s chances to get into the exacta, take a look at the comments about that race. Per the racing form, Herd Immunity went off a “step slow” made a “bid” and then “cleared”. Herd Immunity had to get over trouble to win his first race. That’s impressive.

When it comes to a 2-year-old stakes, we can never discount Todd Pletcher. Todd trained Hyperfocus broke his maiden at 4 ½ furlongs. Focus is bred to run as far as he must. Give this one a big shot to take this. So, consider for all slots on your exotic tickets.

  • Win: Cazadero
  • Place: Herd Immunity
  • Show: Hyperfocus

Race 9 – 5:15 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Dirt – $200,000 G2 Fleur de Lis Handicap

Midnight Bisou figures to go off at 3/5 or 1-to-2. No matter the odds, we can’t suggest a wager on anyone else in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on Saturday. How good is the Steve

Asmussen trained 5-year-old mare? She’s so good that she finished second to Maximum Security in the $20 million Saudi Cup on February 29. She should dominate this field.

Don’t bet on Midnight Bisou to win. Instead, key her in an exacta over a longshot like Motion Emotion. If we drop Serengeti Empress from our exacta, we could make some money. Why Motion Emotion? The Richard Baltas trained runner lost by 23 lengths the last time she ran in a graded stakes. If any horse in this race gets lost on the tote board, it should be Motion Emotion.

For third, we’ll take a chance on Red Dane. Midnight Bisou’s odds will be so low that we must search for value on the bottom of our exotics. Red Dane should offer at least some value.

  • Win: Midnight Bisou
  • Place: Motion Emotion
  • Show: Red Dane
Race 10 – 5:47 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Dirt – $500,000 G2 Stephen Foster Stakes

The Stephen Foster projects as a race among Owendale, By My Standards, and Tom’s d’Etat. Of the three, By My Standards rates as the top choice. The Brett Calhoun trained runner has turned into a beast. He’s won the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic and the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in his last two. The Goldencents sired runner is also 3-for-3 at this 1 1/8 mile distance. He might offer decent odds as well because Tom’s d’Etat could go off at around 6/5.

Of course, there’s a reason horseplayers will be all over Tom’s d’Etat. The Albert Stall trained 7-year-old horse has 5 wins from 8 races at the distance. Tom has won 4-of-5. Also, we know he’ll be ready because Stall doesn’t race him unless he’s in top form.

Owendale can win this. Make sure to use the closer in all slots on all exotic tickets. Also, if By My Standards offers underlay odds to win, consider making Owendale your top choice.

  • Win: By My Standards
  • Place: Tom’s d’Etat
  • Show: Owendale
