Favorites, Dark Horses & Smart Picks for 2018

Written by on May 15, 2018

The 2018 Preakness Stakes means the stage of the horse racing season when the anticipation and excitement really begin to build. We now know the winner of the Kentucky Derby, which means that we now also know which horse has a shot at the coveted Triple Crown. This year, it is Justify that is the horse with the opportunity to make history. The performance he put in at the Derby was absolutely amazing, although there are some who will argue that his running style of going to the front and staying there was perfect for the sloppy track at Churchill Downs a couple of weeks back. There were 19 other horses to hold off in the Derby, but there will only be 7 other horses on the track at the Preakness. Can any of them upset Justify at the latest horse racing odds and kill his shot at the Triple Crown?

2018 Preakness Stakes Favorites

There really is only one favorite in this race, especially given the small field, and that is Justify. This is a horse that has won all 4 of his races this year, and who proved that history means nothing by winning the Derby even though he did not race as a 2-year old. You had to go back more than 125 years to find the last time that happened. While the winner here seems obvious, the Preakness has proven to be a bit of a nightmare for Derby winners. This is a race where longshots often come out of nowhere to win, much like Cloud Computing did last year. Still, Justify looks like a legitimate Triple Crown challenger, and if he runs his best, he should win, albeit at rather short odds.

2018 Preakness Stakes Dark Horses

This is a label that essentially applies to the rest of the pack in the Preakness Stakes. A couple of these horses may not even run, such as the threat that Justify poses. We will find out for sure who is in on Wednesday night when the live draw for post positions is made on NBCSports.com. The obvious dark horse is the second favorite Good Magic. He had a great run at the Kentucky Derby, but he was also a horse that really seemed to embrace the slop. If we get a sloppy track at Pimlico this weekend, he could once again prove to be a threat. For me, the dark horse to keep an eye on is Quip. This is a horse blessed with blazing early speed, a characteristic that seems to play out well in the Preakness Stakes. This race is a little shorter than the Derby, so if he gets to the front early, which he should have no problem doing, he could really put Justify to the test in the later stages of the race. Look for Quip as the Dark Horse for the 2018 Preakness Stakes. The only other horse that I see with a shot at getting in the money is Sporting Chance. This is a horse who has some real closing speed, and who could benefit from a speed duel in the early going. Watch for him coming late.

2018 Preakness Stakes Smart Picks

We are going to look at your betting options in a different article, but the smart pick here would certainly appear to be Justify. I would play him on top in all of your exotic wagers and then hope that one or two of those long odds horses get in the money.
