Fonner Park Picks for Wednesday, April 22

Race 3 – 5:45 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $10,000 Maiden Claiming

Trainer Larry Donlin put the saddle on Turf Paradise runner Coil and Strike for the second time in the 3-year-old filly’s last. The filly improved big time, maybe because she got to go 6 furlongs instead of racing at 4.  Coil and Strike should get a nice trip. As the others backpedal, she’ll come on for the win.

Gaby Vee will inherit the lead in this. The Isai Gonzalez trained runner has the most early speed. But she had the lead in her last at maiden $6.4K and failed to hang on for the win. Although Gonzalez wins at 26% with his second time runners, this one must improve big time to hold off Coil and Strike.

Jerry Gourneau trained Alicia’s Valentine has some speed and gets the rail. She could battle with Gaby Vee in the early stages. Valentine shouldn’t win. But she can hang on for third.

  • Win: Coil and Strike
  • Place: Gaby Vee
  • Show: Alicia’s Valentine

Race 6 – 7:15 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $7,000 Allowance

Trainer Mark Jondle is 0-for-6 at Fonner Park. Since that’s where he trains, he’s 0-for-6 this year. He’s got a runner that finished second and one that finished third, though. Attitude Adjustment, who should get the lead, goes first time for Jondle. Gate-to-wire on the 6/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds  runner.

Isai Gonzalez puts the saddle on Friendly and Kind. The 3/1 second choice finished third in a $7,500 claiming race in her last. That was a 3-race top for the 5-year-old mare. She shouldn’t improve off that event but is still good enough to fill out the exacta in this.

Star Hunter runs for 30% winning trainer Kelli Martinez. The Trappe Shot sired 5-year-old mare gets a nice set-up here. But her form might be going south. She’s best to put on the bottom of exotics.

  • Win: Attitude Adjustment
  • Place: Friendly and Kind
  • Show: Star Hunter

Race 8 – 8:09 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $7,000 Allowance

23% winning jockey Armando Martinez takes the call aboard 9/2 morning line Horse Racing Odds  Alex of Ice. The Afleet Alex sired 4-year-old gelding goes for Kelli Martinez. Even though Alex hasn’t raced since January, the works are decent and this one broke its maiden at the $22,000 level.

Bell Ringer appears better suited for turf. It’s hard to look past the Hard Spun sired colt, though. Trainer Justin Gourneau drops this one to a sprint from a mile on the turf. If Ringer runs back to that March 10 race at Sam Houston, he can win this. Consider for the top spot if you don’t believe in Alex of Ice.

The Isai Gonzalez runner, Djinn of Djibouti, figures to improve off his first for the 20% winning trainer. But the win odds should be too low for a wager on the nose. Still, Djibouti is a must use.

  • Win: Alex of Ice
  • Place: Bell Ringer
  • Show: Djinn of Djibouti
