Horse Racing Picks for Oaklawn Park on March 28
Race 6 – 4:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $36,000 Starter Allowance
Closer Caliente Candy has 3 wins from 4 races at Oaklawn Park. The Donnie Hemnel trained runner takes a huge drop from $75K optional claiming to $36,000 starter allowance. There’s enough speed in this to flatter the closing kick while jockey Luis Quinonez knows her well.
Heaven’s Whisper keeps jockey Joe Talamo and heads into this off a 4-length win going this distance over this dirt in her last. The 5-year-old mare hasn’t finished off the board in 4 races at Oaklawn. Whisper sports a nice 4-2-3 record from 10 races at the distance.
Trainer Steve Hobby is tearing it up at the Arkansas racetrack. Hobby has 6 wins and 3 third-place finishes from 11 races. The 55% winning trainer puts the saddle on 3/1 Horse Racing Odds chalk Headland. This race is deep. So, we want to use the chalk on the bottom of our exotics.
- Win: Caliente Candy
- Place: Heaven’s Whisper
- Show: Headland
Race 8 – 5:34 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $62,000 Allowance
Chalk Magic Dance looks vulnerable, but what filly figures to take her down? How about the Robertino Diodoro trained Ready Or Orb? The 4-year-old Orb sired filly goes third time off the claim for Diodoro, a 25% winning move. Also, she heads into this race off a smashing 4-length victory at a mile in a $92K allowance. She can lie off the speed and then pounce for the win.
Getridofwhatailesu is another stalker/closer type with a shot. Brad Cox trains the daughter of Ghostzapper who has a 2-2 record from 5 races. The only reason to not like her is that she often disappoints. Getridofwhatailesu has offered favorites odds in 4 straight. She looks better underneath.
The aforementioned Magic Dance failed in the Grade 2 Adirondack at Saratoga last summer. She hasn’t run since August 2019. Trainer Steve Asmussen can get them ready off the bench but this event came up tough. Third for Magic Dance looks more probable than first or second.
- Win: Ready Or Orb
- Place: Getridofwhatailesu
- Show: Magic Dance
Race 9 – 6:08 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $100,000 Nodouble Breeders’ Stakes
If Destiny Way holds its 6/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds, look no further for your overlay play. No world-beaters signed up for this while the Hamazing Destiny runner keeps Joe Talamo, comes from the hot Carl Deville barn, has 2 wins from 3 races, and produced a blistering work on March 6. Destiny Way is ready to roll.
Cecil Borel has placed K J’s Nobility in races where the 6-year-old gelding can compete. How else to explain the 3 wins, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds in Nobility’s last 7 races? The gelding is so hot that it beat second-choice Hoonani Road by 2 lengths in a race on Feb. 22.
Speaking of Hoonani Road, the Wayne Catalano trainee always puts forth a good effort. Road won 3 in a row last year. History hasn’t repeated itself this year, but the equine should still put forth a decent effort on Saturday.
- Win: Destiny
- Place: K J’s Nobility
- Show: Hoonani Road
