Santa Anita Park Picks for Friday, May 29
Race 2 – 4:00 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Dirt – $25,000 Claiming
Come On Kat hasn’t raced since March 2019. Trainer Mark Glatt has won 32% at the meet, though. Also, Glatt saddles the chalk, 8/5 on the morning line Busy Paynter. Kat should get a nice stalking trip less than a length off Busy Paynter and Sheza Factor.
Of the two likely front runners, Sheza Factor deserves mentioning to get into the exacta. The 5-year-old mare take a slight step-up in class. That won’t matter. What will is that she’s got a decent record at S.A. with 2 wins and 2 thirds from 5 races at the distance. She can bury the chalk.
Busy Paynter has 3 wins from 5 races at Santa Anita. She takes a step down in class. But why didn’t Glatt find an optional claimer instead of this straight claiming race? Paynter must break from post-position 1. That could compromise the filly’s chances.
- Win: Come On Kat
- Place: Sheza Factor
- Show: Busy Paynter
Race 7 – 6:30 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
Back in February, Kustom for Karl broke its maiden going this distance and over this turf course. The Custom for Carlos sired 3-year-old filly could end up the overlay in this field because a few of her competitors are more accomplished. Jockey Umberto Rispoli should provide a good trip.
Lofty is ultra-fast. If nobody goes with the 9/5 on the morning line chalk, she can take these gate-to-wire. Trainer Mike McCarthy wins 26%. But McCarthy has yet to win a race at Santa Anita. Also, Lofty will get some pace pressure.
That pace-pressure could come from Mean Sophia. She failed in her last race. Go back to the maiden win, though, and we see how fast this filly can run. Sophia may not hold on for the place slot. She should soften up Lofty, though.
- Win: Kustom for Karl
- Place: Lofty
- Show: Mean Sophia
Race 8 – 7:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $40,000 Starter Optional Claiming
Zenyatta trainer John Shirreffs no longer saddles a bunch of horses. So far in 2020, Shirreffs has put the saddle on just 24 equines. He’s won with 5 of those. He’s won with 2-of-6 entrants at Santa Anita. Takeo offers 6/1 on the morning line, gets underrated veteran jock Brice Blanc to pilot, and goes back to turf, the 4-year-old gelding’s best surface.
Trainer Eddie Truman gelded Big Hoof Dynamite after that one’s last race. The 3-year-old gelded son of Data Link broke it’s maiden in a $50,000 claimer. It then finished third and then second in it’s next couple of races. Dynamite should get a great trip behind the front runners.
Mongolian Hero figures to move up a length or two going to trainer John Sadler’s barn. The Midnight Lute sired 4-year-old colt takes a slight drop in class. There’s enough speed to flatter this one’s closing kick. Consider for the top spot if nobody else attracts.
- Win: Takeo
- Place: Big Hoof Dynamite
- Show: Mongolian Hero
