Santa Anita Park Picks for Saturday, June 6
Race 8 – 7:09 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Dirt – $400,000 G1 Santa Anita Derby
Both Bob Baffert trained Authentic and John Shirreff’s trained Honor A.P. will offer underlay odds. That’s why we’re backing Baffert’s other runner, Azul Coast, for the top spot. The Super Saver sired, 15/1 morning line, longshot broke its maiden at first asking, finished second behind Authentic in the Grade 3 Sham, and then won the El Camino Real Derby over the all-weather at Golden Gate in February. Azul Coast may be coming into his own. Also, no way we can back either of the chalks on top.
Of the two chalk runners, Honor A.P. offers more value than Authentic. Shirreff’s won’t run his horses unless he believes they can win. That’s the case with Honor A.P. Sure, he got a good look at Authentic’s posterior in the Grade 2 San Felipe. But we’ll still use ahead of the 4/5 chalk to fill out the exacta.
Expect Authentic to offer less than 4/5. 3/5 or even 2/5 is more than possible. Authentic ranks only behind Tiz the Law on most Kentucky Derby rankings. The Bob Baffert runners could win by 10 lengths. Or, he could finish out of the money. We’re going against him for the top spot.
- Win: Azul Coast
- Place: Honor A.P.
- Show: Authentic
Race 9 – 7:42 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Turf – $150,000 Cinema Stakes
Heywood Beach heads into this off just a maiden win. Trainer John Sadler’s stats with last out maiden winners isn’t bad, though. Sadler wins 16%. Not only that, but Beach breaks from the rail and 29% at the meet winning jockey Flavien Prat rides. Sometimes, after a horse gets a taste for the wire, they hunger for it. That could be Heywood Beach on Saturday.
Trainer Jeff Mullins saddles a couple in this. K P All Systems Go is the preferred runner over 8/5 morning line chalk Hariboux. The More Than Ready sired colt broke its maiden by 6 lengths over this turf and at this distance on Jan. 25. K P came right back and won an $80,000 claimer in its first against winners on March 20. Consider for the top spot if you don’t mind underlay odds.
Hariboux will go off the chalk. With a record of 5-2-1 from 10 races, the other Mullins’ runner should. But Hariboux has never raced further than a mile. Who knows if this one wants the added distance. We’ll use. We just won’t use on top.
- Win: Heywood Beach
- Place: K P All Systems Go
- Show: Hariboux
Race 10 – 8:12 pm ET – 1 ¼ Miles Dirt – $300,000 G1 Hollywood Gold Cup
15/1 on the morning line Parsimony could upset this field. The Doug O’Neil trained runner finished fourth in a $135,000 stakes at Meydan in Dubai in January. Then in February, Parsimony won a $175,000 stakes race at Meydan at this distance. The works leading up to this have been sensational. We’re taking a shot.
John Shirreff’s has a top contender to take the Hollywood Gold Cup. Midcourt has 5 wins, 2 thirds, and a second in its last 8 races. The 2/1 morning line second choice can run near the lead or come from far back. Jockey Victor Espinoz will be counted on to push the button at the right time. We’ll use on top and bottom in the exacta.
12/1 on the morning line Brown Storm could put away fellow front runner Higher Power and hang on for third. Trainer Mike McCarthy trained this one to a fourth place finish in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in his last. The Scat Daddy sired runner has worked well leading up to this. We’ll use to finish out the trifecta.
- Win: Parsimony
- Place: Midcourt
- Show: Brown Storm
