Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Wednesday, April 22
Race 3 – 1:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $7,000 Claiming
5-year-old mare Drinks On Maggie lost her last race by 21 lengths. The Stay Thirsty sired runner goes first time for Gary Johnson, though. That’s a 21% winning move. Johnson also wins 19% with his claimers. The last time Drinks On Maggie raced so poorly, she strung together a couple of huge runs.
Lil B Quick heads into this off an awesome 5 ¼ length win in a $6,250 race in her last. The 5-year-old mare faces other speed in this but if she doesn’t bounce, she has a good chance of holding off chalk Super Twenty Five for second.
Joan Scott trains Super Twenty Five. Not only does the chalk drop in class but Antonio Gallardo rides. Super Twenty Five should win this race but both Drinks On Maggie and Lil B Quick are good horses and the odds will be nothing.
- Win: Drinks On Maggie
- Place: Lil B Quick
- Show: Super Twenty Five
Race 5 – 2:30 pm ET – 6 ½ Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
Legacy Azteca should get a nice trip behind the speed. The Gerald Bennett trained runner finished third in its last. That was the first for Bennett. It was also the first under jockey Sammy Camacho. Azteca should improve in this event.
Morning line chalk Top Seed was agitated and threw in the towel early in its first against winners. The Claude McGaughey trained, Orb sired, 4-year-old colt, shows 3 excellent works since the last. If Top Seed stays calm, he can win this. Expect the favorite to go off at underlay odds, though.
Saucey Don finished second in its last as a close to 22/1 long shot. Trainer Cristopher Seale doesn’t saddle a lot of horses. He’s a cagey trainer, though, which is why he takes blinkers off. Don could run into the trifecta or even the exacta if Top Seed doesn’t fire.
- Win: Legacy Azteca
- Place: Top Seed
- Show: Saucey Don
Race 7 – 3:30 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt –$20,000 Maiden Special Weight
Trainer Michael Stidham wins 28% at this meet, which is why Godolphin owned Sense of Justice gets the nod to win the seventh at Tampa on Wednesday. The Street Sense sired runner ran great in his second lifetime event. Stidham put a maintenance work into the morning line third choice. Justice should improve enough to get his picture taken.
Shug McGaughey doesn’t often get them ready to win first time. Creed could be the exception. Sired by Honor Code, Creed is a $650,000 purchase that picks up Antonio Gallardo to ride. Don’t look past this runner to head to the winner’s circle after the race. Consider for the exacta box with Sense of Justice.
Blame the Cake is the morning line Horse Racing Odds . The Ian Wilkes trained runner hasn’t raced since last August at Saratoga. The Blame sired 3-year-old has talent. It’s asking a lot to win first time after such a long layoff, though.
- Win: Sense of Justice
- Place: Creed
- Show: Blame the Cake
