Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Saturday, April 25

Race 1 – 12:28 pm ET – 6 ½ Furlongs Dirt- $20,000 Maiden Special Weight

This isn’t a great bunch of maidens. That’s why the pick is 12/1 on the morning line Command Point. The Point of Entry sired filly has a nice work tab leading up to the debut. Trainer James Gulick has decent stats for first-timers. He wins 25% with debut maiden special weight runners and 17% with all first-time starters.

Three Quarter Time goes turf to dirt for trainer Thomas Proctor. The Tiznow sired filly had to check in her last race and then go 3 and 4 wide. She still managed to run respectably. If the pace is quick enough, she could mow by the leaders in the stretch. Consider on top and bottom.

3/1 morning line Bourbon Rebellion figures to go off less than the initial odds. She picks up jockey Samy Camacho and goes turf to dirt for Eoin Harty. That’s a 15% winning move. Harty’s won 3-of-6 with his runners going sprint-route-sprint.

  • Win: Command Point
  • Place: Three Quarter Time
  • Show: Bourbon Rebellion

Race 5 – 2:28 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$16,000 Claiming

It’s hard to understand why Nevans is 8/1 on the morning line. Sure, the Temple City sired gelding ran awful in it’s last. That was a $32,000 claimer. This is the lowest level Nevans has ever run at. A nice 4-furlong move on April 16 shows Nevans is ready to roll.

It will be difficult for any horse to beat Professional. The Jordan Blair trainee gets the rail where jockey Antonio Gallardo can see what the speed does in front of him. Professional ran its last race at the $25k claiming level. The gelding figures to improve at the $16K level. Gallardo can make sure this one gets into the exacta.

Vintner has 2 wins and 2 thirds in its last 4 races. The Moises Yanez trainee figures to run for third again. If jockey Harry Hernandez keeps this one close enough early, it could win. So, consider for the top and bottom of your exotics.

  • Win: Nevans
  • Place: Professional
  • Show: Vintner

Race 9 – 4:32 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt –$20,000 Maiden Special Weight

Thomas Proctor attracts Antonio Gallardo for Ski Bunny’s debut on Saturday. The Union Rags sired 3-year-old filly has a nice, steady work tab leading up to this. Glenn Hill Farm bought this one for $100,000. So, we know she’s well meant.

Misty Express could blow up the exotics. The 20/1 on the morning line runner hasn’t raced since June 2019. She has decent works, though. Also, she might be lone speed, which means she could take these close to the finish line before Ski Bunny catches her.

Ian Wilkes trained Recoded has had plenty of chances. The 2/1 chalk heads into her fifth race on Saturday. Maybe, she doesn’t care to win. To us, she has that look of a money burner. Do your due diligence before betting to win.

  • Win: Ski Bunny
  • Place: Misty Express
  • Show: Recoded
