Will Rogers Downs Picks for Wednesday, April 8
Race 5 – 4:15 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $7,500 Claiming
If no other horse runs with Ancona early, the 7/2 morning line Horse Racing Odds third choice could go gate-to-wire. Ancona won a race 2 back doing exactly that. She followed the victory up with another win. This time, she lied 1 ¼ lengths behind the speed before taking over and going on for the victory. Jockey Ty Kennedy and trainer Robertino Diodoro know what they’re doing. So, take this one seriously for the win.
It’s tough to look past chalk Bode On Tap. The 5-year-old Bodemeister sired mare takes a massive drop from the $15,000 level. She shows decent works for trainer Danny Pish while her best races have happened over dirt. She should get a nice setup on Wednesday. If it weren’t for the guaranteed underlay odds, we’d back to win.
Nautia takes a huge drop for trainer Steve Asmussen. Like Bode On Tap and Ancona, Nautia deserves win consideration. Asmussen has 3 wins from 7 races at Will Rogers Downs. He wins 23% down 2+ class levels. Nautia looks tough but unless Bode On Tap and Ancona get into a speed duel, she’ll have to make up a ton of ground in the stretch.
- Win: Ancona
- Place: Bode On Tap
- Show: Nautia
Race 8 – 5:45 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $7,500 Claiming
Trainer Brent Davidson puts the saddle on 5/2 morning line favorite Silver Luke Silver. The 5-year-old horse takes a steep drop in class, has speed and should find itself on the lead. So, although Davidson wins 2% with runners going sprint to route, Silver Luke Silver is the play to get the win money in the eighth.
My Macho Mon runs for 50% winning trainer George Blatchford. Before dumping on My Macho Mon for the win, realize that Blatchford has 2 wins from 4 runners. That’s where the 50% comes in. My Macho Mon should get a nice trip behind Silver Luke Silver, though. That’s why we got the gelding filling out the exacta.
Closer Toccetive Jac has a chance to finish third at juicy 10/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds. Jac finished second in a 5 furlong sprint at Fairmount Park in its last. But, the gelding won at 1 mile and 40 yards in a race at Fairmount last August. Toccetive Jac can get into the tri.
- Win: Silver Luke Silver
- Place: My Macho Mon
- Show: Toccetive Jac
Race 9 – 6:15 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Dirt – $17,050 Handicap
A lot of speed has signed up for this 5 furlong jaunt. The speed of the speed might be the Scott Young trained Shannon C. Young wins 28% at Will Rogers Downs and 29% with beaten favorites. This one hasn’t raced since last April. The works are stellar, though, and the inactivity means the 5-year-old gelding should keep its odds.
Morning line chalk Bay Muzik heads over to Will Rogers Downs after running on the turf at Golden Gate and Santa Anita. Trainer William Morey wins 18% with horses going first time for him. Make no mistake, Muzik should get the perfect trip. But, it’s tough to back underlay all-weather and turf runners making the switch to dirt for the win.
Direct Dial might go off the favorite. The Steve Asmussen trained runner has a 5-4-5 record from 20 starts. But jockey Lane Luzzi must decide from post-position 1. Does she gun it to get position? Or, does she pull back and take out with the hope of catching the other speed? Who knows what the answer is? Let’s make Direct Dial third.
- Win: Shannon C.
- Place: Bay Muzik
- Show: Direct Dial
