Will Rogers Downs Picks for Wednesday, April 22
Race 6 – 4:45 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $12,500 Claiming
Three’s a ton of speed in this. But Jon Arnett trained runner Alexandross might be the speed of the speed. If nobody goes with Alexandross, the Leandro Goncalves piloted runner should pop at 4/1 Horse Racing Odds from the rail. Arnett wins 38% at Will Rogers Downs.
Trainer Karl Broberg has won with 23% of his WRD runners. Not only does Kats Second Silver benefit from Broberg putting the saddle on but the 5-year-old gelding should also benefit from 31% winning jockey David Cabrera piloting. We won’t find odds on the Broberg horse, though, which is why shun for the win.
Trapalanda has won its last couple by a combined 10 lengths. All runners at this level eventually show declining form. That’s what we’re counting on by making the chalk third.
- Win: Alexandross
- Place: Kats Second Silver
- Show: Trapalanda
Race 7 – 5:15 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $15,000 Maiden Claiming
Broberg and Cabrera hook up with Spectacular Temper in Race 7. If there’s one chalk on the Will Rogers Downs card that deserves serious consideration, it’s this 3-year-old filly. She’s got ascending speed ratings, which means Broberg has her primed for a win. Almost as important? Because this is a maiden race, she’s likelier to keep her morning line odds than Trapalanda in the sixth.
If you believe in Cecelia’s Gems, its because you have faith in trainer angles. Gems goes first time for trainer Paul McEntee. Paul wins 17% with runners going first time for him. She’ll improve off her last for sure. But she won’t catch Spectacular Temper.
Plenty of Munny bounced in her last. She ran a respectable race on March 7 at Sam Houston. In that event, she finished sixth by 5 ¾ lengths. Even if she runs back to the March 7 race, she won’t beat Cecelia’s Gem or Spectacular Temper. But she should finish third.
- Win: Spectacular Temper
- Place: Cecelia’s Gem
- Show: Plenty of Munny
Race 9 – 6:15 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $20,900 Allowance
Trainer Steve Asmussen ships 4/1 on the morning line Majestic Queen. The Majesticperfection sired 4-year-old filly goes first time against winners. Often, that’s a bad play. But Asmussen wins 21% with the move. The other contenders in this have some knocks. Also, if we can get 4/1 on an Asmussen runner at Will Rogers, we had better consider for the win.
Vallestina, the morning line chalk, bounced in her last. She had strung together a couple of nice runs at the $16,000 claiming level over at Santa Anita Park. If she could run with the ponies at The Great Race Place, she can hang with these.
Paul McEntee saddles Morgan’s David for the first time. David Cabrera takes the call. That means this runner is well-meant. Consider for the win if the odds drift above the 7/2 morning line. Use on top and bottom of the exotics for sure.
- Win: Majestic Queen
- Place: Vallestina
- Show: Morgan’s David
