Odds to Win the 2019 World Series
Washington Nationals Analysis
The Nationals rely on 3 things: excellent performances from Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, timely hitting, and cagey managing by Dave Martinez.
Scherzer and Strasburg make up one of the most dominant starting duos in MLB. Scherzer, who will start Game 1, has a 2.92 ERA. He was unreal in the playoffs, throwing 7-1 against the Dodgers in the NLCS in a 6-1 win, and 7 versus the Cardinals in the NLDS in a 3-1 victory.
Strasburg was equally effective. He threw twice versus the Dodgers, both wins, and once against the Cardinals. The key for both starters is to throw deep into games. If they can do that, Martinez can use his bullpen effectively.
The Nationals Achilles Heel is the bullpen, which is why Martinez has thrown out starters to pitch a couple of innings here and there. When Martinez gets quality innings from his starters acting like relievers, Washington is difficult to beat.
Houston Astros Analysis
A.J. Hinch manages the Houston Astros more traditionally. Hinch relies on his 3 aces: Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, and Zack Greinke, to get at least 6, if not 7, innings. Cole and Verlander should be just fine.
Even though Verlander gave up 4 runs to the Yankees in Game 5, he bounced back with an excellent performance. He’ll throw Game 2 at Minute Maid Park. Cole, who is on an amazing winning streak, throws Game 1 while Greinke pitches Game 3 in Washington.
Questions, no doubt, surround Greinke after he failed to impress in the ALCS. He picked it up some in the ALDS, but he hasn’t looked like the Greinke of old. Then again, he used to throw in the National League, like Cole, which means he’s had plenty of experience facing Washington’s batters.
The Astros have one of the best offenses in Major League Baseball. When it’s on, like it was in Game 6 versus NYY, no pitching staff can shut it down.
2019 World Series Nationals vs Astros Final Betting Analysis
If Cole and Verlander do their jobs, and both should since they pitch off regular rest in Game 1 and Game 2, the Stros only have to wait out Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.
Once Martinez tries to cobble together a bullpen, things could backfire. The Astros are awesome at Minute Maid Park. They got the bats going versus New York’s terrific bullpen. Why wouldn’t they get them going versus a patchwork bullpen?
When the series shifts to D.C., Greinke’s experience versus the Nats could be the key to how far this series goes. He’s faced Anthony Rendon, the Nationals’ top hitter, 12 times. Rendon is only 1-of-12 against Greinke.
Versus an NL team, Greinke could be ultra-effective. Don’t be surprised if Cole, Verlander, and Greinke win the first 3 games. Hinch won’t put Gerrit onto the mound in Game 4 off 3 days of rest. Instead, he’ll have Gerrit throw Game 5.
If we give the Nationals Game 4, the series should go 5 games. But, that’s it. The Houston Astros will win the 2019 World Series.
