When the baseball season begins in spring, teams know that they can get off to a slow start and still recover. A season that runs 162 games is one that tends to be very forgiving. By the time August rolls around, though, time is beginning to run out, which means your chances of getting into the playoffs start to diminish if you aren’t already occupying one of the open spots. The Baltimore Orioles are still very much alive in the sports betting odds, and they will hope to stay that way when they close out a 3-game series in Seattle on Wednesday.

Date/Time: Wednesday August 12, 1:40 PM
Venue: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
Radio: 105.7 The Fan
Opening Line: Seattle -112, Baltimore +102

The Orioles (57-54) managed to get this series off to a very good start, winning the opening game 3-2. These are the types of games that they need to keep on winning, as they are still 2 games back of the struggling LA Angels for the final Wild Card spot in the AL. That really is the team they have to target, as it doesn’t look as though they are going to be able to run down the Yankees and the suddenly red hot Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. As it stands right now, they are 4-3 on this west coast swing, which is excellent considering that they are 9 games under .500 on the road this season. The Orioles are getting some very timely hits from a bunch of different guys, and have managed to put together a 6-4 record over the last 10 games. If they can win this series, they should head still very much in the playoff picture. Kevin Gausman (2-3, 4.56 ERA) will get the start for Baltimore.

The Mariners (52-61) are essentially done for the season, but they are still a tricky team to overcome. Their bats have warmed up of late, which means that they cannot simply be regarded as an easy win. Had the Mariners been able to find these hits earlier in the year, they may not be in the predicament that they are in right now. It has been a stunning lack of offense that has proven to be their Achilles heel all season long, and their 421 total runs scored puts them in third worst in the AL behind the Rays and the White Sox. The big question now is whether this run of good offensive form can continue for an extended period of time. Hisashi Iwakuma (3-2, 4.41 ERA) will get the start for the Mariners on Wednesday afternoon.

These two teams are on a similar run of form right now, but a little touch of desperation and something to play for can often be the difference. If that is the case, then look for the O’s to get the win.
