No team starts the season with the goal of finishing last in the division, but as the season wears on, it becomes obvious for MLB betting fans who the most likely candidates are going to be. Things are not quite so obvious in the AL East, where any one of three teams could have the shame of landing in the cellar. The series between the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays, which ends on Sunday in TB, could well help decide who gets that spot.

The Baltimore Orioles (72-74) seem the least likely to land in the cellar, because they are 2.5 games up on the Red Sox, who currently occupy the bottom spot, and they are actually playing pretty good ball at the moment. It certainly also helps that they came out and took the opening game of this series with a 4-3 win. The Orioles are a healthy 7-3 in their last 10, and while they are technically still in the Wild Card race at 4.5 games back, the likelihood of passing all the teams that sit above them right now means that they really don’t have much of a chance to get in.
The biggest decision that the Orioles have at the moment is deciding what they are going to do with a team that has a number of name players about to become free agents. Kevin Gausman (3-6, 4.15 ERA) comes into this game unbeaten in his last 3 starts.
If you could bet on which team was going to finish at the bottom of the AL East come season’s end, my money would be on the Tampa Bay Rays (70-76). Of the three teams with a shot of landing on the bottom, they are the one that is in the worst run of form. It doesn’t help that 6 of their remaining games come against the Toronto Blue Jays, who are suddenly the favorites to represent the AL in the World Series. As has been the case all season long, the Rays continue to struggle to get runs home, and their 557 total runs scored this season is far and away the worst in the AL.
At least they know what they need to focus on in the offseason, so don’t be surprised to see them invest in a couple of big hitters once the free agency period begins. Jake Odorizzi (8-8, 3.26 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rays on Sunday.

These are two teams in very differing runs of form at the moment, and I always favor the team that is going well, even when they are playing on the road. That is why my money will be on the Baltimore Orioles.
