Analyzing The MLB Early 2017 World Series Highlights: Favorite, Smart Pick & Longshot
The Favorite To Win The 2017 World Series: Chicago Cubs (3/1)
The Chicago Cubs are the definitive favorite – and rightfully so, seeing as how they have a plethora of young talent that will be around for at least the next handful of seasons, no not mention arguably the best manager and GM in the game today.
Young stars like Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez, Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber are all under the age of 28. Rizzo will be the first player in the group to hit free agency, although that might not happen until after the 2021 season if both of the option years on his contract get picked up (they will, duh).
Veteran backup catcher David Ross, who retired following Wednesday’s Game 7 clincher, is the only player from this year’s squad that is guaranteed not to return next season. Flame-throwing hurler Aroldis Chapman is an impending free agent who will get paid this offseason, from some team if not the Cubs, while Travis Wood is also heading into free agency.
Outfielder Dexter Fowler has a mutual option for $9 million that includes a $5 million buyout, meaning he will almost assuredly be back. Overall, the Cubs just have the look of a team that will be elite title contenders for at least the next 3—5 seasons if you ask me.
The Smart Bet To Win The 2017 World Series: Cleveland Indians (12/1)
In reality, the Chicago Cubs are the smart pick to win it all again next season, but I don’t want to keep singing their praises since everyone knows they’re going to contend next season at the very least. For me, a team like the Cleveland Indians, that still has plenty of young talent and a ‘genius’ manager like Terry Francona always is a smart pick to get back to the World Series to complete their unfinished business.
The Kansas City Royals proved this to be true after losing the 2014 World Series but coming back with an even more renewed effort to win it all last season. While the Indians are my selection as the smart pick to win the 2017 World Series, they’re certainly not a lock and will have their work cut out for them just to get back to the big dance next season.
If Cleveland can return the vast majority of this season’s roster while getting some improved production out of players like Carlos Carrasco, Danny Salazar and Michael Brantley, they could very well represent the AL in the 2017 World Series to finish off a task they fell agonizingly short of this season.
The Longshot To Win The 2017 World Series: Los Angeles Angels (100/1)
The Los Angeles Angels went 74-88 this season and are collective bunch of huge underachievers for the most part. Still, the Halos are my longshot pick for three reasons. First and foremost, the 100/1 odds they are offering are simply stupendous. Second, unless you forgot, L.A. still has two players named Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, though the latter is clearly not the player he used to be in St. Louis.
Last but not least, L.A. has an owner in Arte Moreno that will spend whatever it takes to field championship-winning team. I know the Angels still need more quality pitching in the worst way, but they’re my longshot pick for the aforementioned reasons and I’m sticking with them, no matter how much they underachieve next season (fingers and toes, crossed).
