Rivalries in baseball stay alive for MLB betting fans even when one of the teams is not at the sort of level they are used to operating at. The Boston Red Sox are going through another down year, and have had to sit back and watch as the New York Yankees challenge for a division title and a playoff spot. Boston cannot stop the Yankees march to the postseason, but they can hurt their chances of winning the AL East when they hook up in New York on Tuesday.

The Yankees (86-69) have not yet officially locked up a postseason spot, but that will come at some point this week. While they still hold out hope of winning the division, the 4 games that they have to make up on the Toronto Blue Jays makes their chances of doing so pretty slim. Last week saw the Yankees post another winning record, but the 2 of 3 games that they dropped to the Jays took some of the shine off the impressive series win they put together over the Chicago White Sox after that. The final 7 games of the season all come against AL East opponents, with the Baltimore Orioles next up after this series.

It is definitely now looking like a Wild Card game for the Yankees but they may well have to wait until the end of this week to find out who they will be facing. Michael Pineda (12-8, 3.99 ERA) will start for the Yankees.

Last week was a bit of a strange one for the Red Sox (75-80), as an awful start was followed by a pretty spectacular finish. By the time it was all over, Boston had lifted themselves off the bottom of the division by the smallest of margins. Things certainly didn’t start well, as the Red Sox dropped 3 of 4 to the Tampa Bay Rays to start the week, but a 3-game sweep of the Orioles, who Boston held scoreless, was how the week ended. The Red Sox scored 17 runs over those 3 games, and you have to say that it is the most complete performance that this team has put in all season long.

That said, it doesn’t change the fact that they will need to swing some deals in the off season in order to be competitive once again. Rick Porcello (8-14, 5.04 ERA) will be on the mound for Boston.
