There are a few teams in baseball who have gained a level of notoriety due to some sort of futility over an extended period of time. The Colorado Rockies, who are favorites in MLB odds, are well on their way to a 5th straight 90-loss season, but that pales in significance to the Chicago Cubs, who have now gone over 100 years without winning a World Series. These two teams will finish up a 3-game series in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.

Venue: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
Opening MLB Odds:  Chi Cubs -165

It’s highly unlikely that the Cubs (52-46) will bring that streak to an end this season, but there are certainly signs that they are heading in the right direction. They have an extremely talented, albeit very young, group of guys on staff, and the feeling from the very beginning of this season was that they were likely still a year or two away from glory. The young Cubs have been a fun team to watch all season long, with the likes of Kris Bryant delivering on the promise that he has shown in the minors. Chicago is beginning to see their season slip away a little, as the Cardinals and Pirates start to open up a pretty sizeable lead atop the division, but the fans of this team can certainly feel good about the near future fir their ball club. Jon Lester (5-8, 3.32 ERA) will start for the Cubs. Lester has failed to pick up the win in each of his last 4 home starts.

Things do not look so rosy for the Colorado Rockies (42-55), but first year GM Jeff Bridich has just shown that he is not afraid to pull the trigger on a big trade, as he sent Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Jose Reyes. There was certainly a lot of rumors that Tulowitzki was on the way out of Colorado, but the feeling was that it would be prospects coming the other way. In Reyes, the Rockies have landed a guy who will be able to contribute right away. You really have to wonder if this is the end of the trade deadline moves by the Rockies. It might just be that Bridich is ready to blow this whole team up. Eddie Butler (3-6, 4.77 ERA) will take to the mound for the Rockies on Wednesday afternoon.

While Lester has saved his best stuff for the road, he is facing a team that the Cubs really should be able to beat. I think his offense will give him all he needs to get the win in this one.
