It’s fair to say that it has been a bit of a down year for the American League and MLB betting fans. You need only look at the state of the Wild Card race, where you 3 teams under .500 who are still within 5 games of the final spot. The Chicago White Sox are one of those teams, and while their chances of getting into the postseason are slim, they will continue to battle when they welcome in the Seattle Mariners for a 4-game series starting on Thursday.

The White Sox (59-65) could conceivably make a run at that final Wild Card spot if they were able to pick up a head of steam down the stretch. Other than a great run towards the end of July, this is a team that has not really proven capable of putting together a long winning streak. They actually held off from making any major deadline moves because of that good run, and it appears to have come back to haunt them. Every time it looks as though the White Sox might be about to get on a roll, they turn around and lose 2 or 3 games on the trot.

They did break out of a minor skid by beating the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Tuesday, and they can pick up a series win with another victory on Wednesday. That may give them some confidence as they prepare to face a Mariners team that is not exactly setting the world on fire. Carlos Rodon (5-5, 4.22 ERA) will get the start for Chicago.

The Mariners (58-68) will go into Wednesday’s game against the Oakland A’s with a chance to win the series. That would be considered something of a victory, seeing as how they had lost the 3 series prior to that one. Included in that mix was a 2-1 series loss to the White Sox, albeit on the road in Chicago. While a lot of things have not gone to plan for the Mariners this season, it has to be the performance of the bullpen that has been the most disappointing. In fairness to them, though, it certainly doesn’t help that they are being called upon on such a consistent basis.

It is the pitching staff that is most likely to undergo the most changes in the offseason. Vidal Nuno (0-1, 3.22 ERA) is coming off a solid start against the White Sox. He allowed just 1 earned run in 6.2 innings, but ended up with the no decision as the bullpen fell apart.

I am certainly not suggesting that the White Sox have what it takes to get back into the playoff race, but they should be able to win this series, starting with the win on Thursday.
