It’s no real secret that a way a team finishes their season can have an impact on how far they go in the playoffs. A team on a winning streak can ride that all the way to the World Series, while teams that back in seldom get beyond the Wild Card game. The Pittsburgh Pirates and LA Dodgers are at opposite ends of the scale right now, and they will hook up in LA on Saturday with the Dodgers as clear favorites on MLB betting lines.

The Dodgers (84-71) are on a great run of form at the moment, and their confidence can all be traced back to a huge win over the San Francisco Giants. LA swept the champions to kick off the month of September, taking a stranglehold of the NL West in the process. There was still some cause for concern, though, as the Dodgers had to follow that series up with a 10-game road trip. The concern came from the fact that LA has struggled on the road all year, and the feeling was that if they delivered more of the same, they may well undo all the good they had done versus the Giants. They proved the doubters wrong, though, going 7-3 on the road to maintain a 7.5 game lead over the Giants in the division. Clayton Kershaw (14-6, 2.12 ERA) comes into this start having won his last 4.The Pirates (87-59) are a team in danger of heading in the opposite direction if they don’t do well in this series. They were in a good run of form through September, and had even cut the gap atop the NL Central to just 2.5 games. That all came to an end when they ran into the Chicago Cubs, who managed to take 3 of 4 from the Pirates. Pittsburgh ended up losing the final 3 games of that series, and now find themselves 5 game back of a Cardinals team who seem to have found their winning touch again. The Cubs did a great job of shutting down the high-powered offense of the Pirates, and with Greinke and Kershaw both scheduled to be on the mound for this series, it may end up being more of the same. Francisco Liriano (10-7, 3.45 ERA) will be on the mound for the Pirates on Saturday.
