Free MLB Betting Pick on Atlanta Braves at Boston Red Sox

No team really wants to start thinking about next year this early in the MLB betting season, but there comes a time when reality starts to sink in. The fact that the Boston Red Sox are the only team in the AL East with a losing record would suggest that their time might well be now. The Atlanta Braves are still alive in their division, and will have a chance to keep pace when they face Boston in a 4-game interleague series. The first two games will be in Boston, with the second game set for Tuesday afternoon.

Opening line: Boston -145, Atlanta +135

The Boston Red Sox (27-37) haven’t been able to really get anything going all season long, but were staying alive in the division thanks to the fact that none of the other 4 teams were really making any major moves. That has all changed now, though, as the Yankees and Blue Jays are on a tear that has opened up an 8-game gap between first and worst, which is where Boston sits. There has been a lot that has gone wrong for Boston this season, but the one thing that stands out is the number of runs (307) that they have given up. They are one of only 2 teams, the Rockies being the other, to have given up more than 300 runs to this point in the season. You just can’t win on a consistent basis when you are leaking runs at such a ridiculous rate. Wade Miley (5-6, 5.07 ERA) will take to the mound on Tuesday, where he will look to bounce back from a less than stellar effort last time out.

The Atlanta Braves (30-33) could well have been in line to be one of the surprise teams of the season were it not for the fact that their bullpen flat out stinks. Over the past couple of weeks, the Braves have had 3 separate games where they scored 8 runs, yet still managed to lose. That has actually been what their entire season has looked like, as solid starting efforts get blown out of the water by a bullpen that simply cannot hold onto a lead. The latest such loss came on Sunday at the hands of the Mets, with the Braves going down 10-8 and blowing the chance to win a series that would have rally tightened things up atop the NL East. As it stands now, the Braves are 3.5 games out of first. Julio Teheran (4-2, 4.78 ERA) will get the start for the Braves on Tuesday.

Key Betting Trends

  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Atlanta’s last 5 games on the road
  • The total has gone OVER in 6 of Atlanta’s last 7 games
  • Boston is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Atlanta
  • Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Atlanta

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

For the most part, Teheran has pitched pretty well this season, and if he can get on an early roll here, he might keep the Red Sox off the board long enough for his offense to stake him a lead. It’ll then just be a matter of the Braves holding on for dear life to get the win.
