That said, what the Mets did offensively in those games was very impressive indeed. They landed in the top 3 in OPS, slugging, on base percentage, and home runs during Spring Training, and you get the sense that if they can carry that over into the regular season, they might just be a threat. That power was not evident in the opening day tilt versus the Nationals, but that was down to a gem pitched by Max Scherzer, who took a hitless streak into the 6th inning. What the Mets did do was take advantage of a couple of errors to walk away with the 3-1 win. It’s no surprise that the Nationals will go as far as their pitching staff carries them this season, and if the performance by Scherzer is what we have to look forward to, then it could be a very special season. That said, there is no overlooking those two costly errors in the first game, which we could put down to opening day jitters in front of an excited home crowd. Bartolo Colon put in a stellar performance on the mound, with his only real glitch being the home run he gave up to Bryce Harper in the 4th. Degrom Jacob will take to the hill for the Mets on Wednesday night, while Jordan Zimmerman will get the ball for the Nationals.
