No team wins or loses their division in April, but they can certainly build a solid foundation that can propel them forward through the taxing 162-game season. Expectations and MLB odds are high for both the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates, who start a 3-game series on Monday, but it has been a very different first week for both of these teams.

Corey Hart, Pedro Alvarez & Josh Harrison each go deep to help Pirates hand Tigers their first loss of season, 5-4. pic.twitter.com/qggJoTY1d8— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) April 13, 2015The Tigers have come flying out of the gate and have reeled off 6 straight wins to open their season. Not only are they winning, they are doing it in some considerable style, cranking out 47 runs in those first 6 games. The biggest question mark with the Tigers coming into the season was their bullpen, so the ability to put runs on the board is going to be crucial to the success of this team. Starting pitching will also need to be solid for the Tigers to be successful, and they certainly got a great start from Tuesday starter Shane Greene. He threw 8-innings of near perfect ball, giving up just 3 hits and 1 unearned run in his opener versus the Twins. A similar performance would certainly help the Tigers continue their strong start. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been one of the better stories in baseball over the past couple of years. It has been fun to see a team that was once the laughing stock of the league become a regular in postseason play. The good feeling is starting to wear off with their fan base, though, as they want to to be more than just a team that gets into the postseason every year. Despite losing Russell Martin to free agency, the Pirates look as though they have their strongest squad in years. That has not translated to a strong start, though, as they went just 2-4 in their opening week. AJ Burnett will get the ball for the Pirates on Tuesday, and he is coming off a pretty good start in his first game. He was carrying a shutout into the 6th versus the Reds before giving up a 2-run bomb that got him yanked.
