You don’t ever like to accuse a team of tanking in order to get a top draft pick, but sometimes the things that you see would certainly suggest that it’s exactly what is going on. The Philadelphia Phillies are in that position right now, and while they may not be deliberately losing, it might actually not be a bad idea, as they need as much help as possible. They will travel to Miami to face the Marlins on Wednesday night, with the Marlins as favorites on the MLB odds.

The race for worst in the MLB looked as though it was going to be a tight one, with the Braves and the Phillies (56-94) both in with a shot of taking that spot. Philadelphia laid claim to it pretty quickly, though, by getting hit with a 3-game sweep by Atlanta at the tail end of last week. Given that Philly had also just been swept by the Nationals, it meant that the week ended with no wins, and very little to give fans any type of hope for the future. This is a truly awful team, and they only managed to put together 12 runs in those 6 losses. Worse yet, 7 of those runs came in a single game, which was an extra innings loss to the Nats. Even if the Phillies do get the first pick overall in the draft, it will do little to make a dent in what needs to be done in the offseason. Fan turnout at home games is beginning to dip to very low levels, as patience is beginning to wear thin. David Buchanan (2-9, 8.49 ERA) has lost 4 straight, and has been hot very hard in those losses.

You get an idea of just how bad the NL East division is when you see that the Miami Marlins (64-86) are currently occupying third place. Outside of the Mets and the Nationals, there is no other team there that looks in any kind of positon to challenge for a title without some wholesale changes being made in the offseason. The Marlins do have some solid pieces in place, but they will need to build around the likes of Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez if they want to put together a team that can challenge next year. The Marlins have been playing .500 ball over the last 10 games, and have been going through an extended stretch of putting a nice little win streak together, followed by a losing streak of the same length. They are due to start winning again if they follow that trend, and the Phillies might just be the team to allow them to do that. Adam Conley (4-1, 4.22 ERA) has pitched very well in each of his last 4 starts, picking up 3 wins in the process.

The Marlins are certainly the better of these two bad teams, and I believe they will come away with a pretty comfortable win if Conley continues to pitch well.
