Great teams all possess a killer instinct that allows them to put away the opposition when they are down to the enjoyment of MLB betting fans. The teams throughout baseball history who has tossed away large division leads were the ones who did not possess that trait. It remains to be seen whether or not it’s something that the New York Mets have in them, but we might get a better idea when they head into Philly on Tuesday with a chance to increase their division lead.

The Mets (67-56) may have a 5-game lead atop the NL East, but there are a lot of people who are still not convinced that they can make any type of noise come playoff time. The Mets do seem to go into lulls, and may well be in real trouble were it not for the fact that the Washington Nationals are seriously underachieving this year. There were a lot of positives to take from last week’s events, as the Mets rebounded from a sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates to go a combined 4-1 against the Orioles and the Rockies.

Matt Harvey missed out on his rotation spot on Sunday, but Logan Verrett filled in admirably to pick up his first win in the majors. Noah Syndergaard (7-6, 3.17 ERA) will get the start as he looks to become a little more consistent coming down the home stretch.

The Phillies (50-74) are coming into this series on an improbable 3-game win streak, after taking 3 of 4 from a Marlins team that had been pretty hot prior to that series. Philadelphia will have 7 of their next 10 games against the New York Mets, and will be relishing the opportunity to play a role in how the division looks after the next couple of weeks. The Phillies have had a much better second half than most expected, but they still look to be seriously over matched in this series.

Defensively, they have been excellent over the past 3 games, and that is a trend that they will need to try and keep going if they are not to be swept away here. It will be Jerome Williams (4-9, 6.10 ERA) who will start for the Phillies on Tuesday. Williams was shelled in his last start, and didn’t make it past the second inning.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Mets chase Williams early, as he has struggled all season long. This is a series where I believe the Mets will indeed flash that killer instinct.
