There is nothing more frustrating than having a playoff spot within reach, but not being able to do enough to grab hold of it. That is what the fans of the LA Angels are experiencing right now, as their team takes them on a rollercoaster ride through the final few weeks of the season. The Angels will try to stay close when they head to Oakland to face the A’s in a 3-game series, with the second game set for Tuesday night. Be sure to check for more betting odds by clicking here.

If the Angels (65-65) end up on the outside looking in once the playoffs start, they will have no-one to blame but themselves. They were in control of the final Wild Card spot, but some inconsistent play has seen them fall a game and a half off the pace. Last week was a perfect example of that inconsistency, as they started out by taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers, only to turn around and be swept by the Cleveland Indians. This is a series that the Angels should win, and one that they likely have to, as they have the Rangers, Dodgers, and Astros coming up right after. That is a stretch of games that could very well seal their playoff fate one way or the other. If they are to stay alive, the Angels are going to have to wake up offensively, as what they delivered last week is simply not good enough. Matt Shoemaker (6-9, 4.48 ERA) will start, and is coming off a gem his last time out.
The biggest mistake that the Angels could make is to look beyond this series at the big ones ahead. While the Oakland A’s (57-74) are having a pretty awful season, they are still not a team that can simply be overlooked. They are coming into this series after putting back to back wins together against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which allowed them to close out a 6-game road trip with a .500 record. This is a team that fights to the bitter end, which might explain why they have 8 extra-inning games to their credit in the second half of the season. Chris Bassitt (1-6, 2.82 ERA) has pitched a whole lot better than his win/loss record would suggest.

This has the potential of being a trip up series for the Angels, especially if they continue to struggle at the plate. I like the Oakland A’s to get the win in this one, and perhaps in the series, too.
