The New York Mets have done a great job to this point in the season, and deservedly lead the NL East by 3.5 games, but they have to be hearing the footsteps from the Washington Nationals, who are now occupying second place. The Nats will play the final of a 3-game series against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon, and may even be in position to record a sweep, depending on how the second of the three games goes. It took the entire month of April to shake the cobwebs loose, but it now appears that the real Washington Nationals (13-14) are starting to show up. The starting rotation is finally firing on all cylinders, allowing the Nats to win 6 of their last 7 games. They have hauled themselves right back into contention by winning consecutive series against division rivals. They started out by taking 2 of 3 from the Braves before following that up with 3 of 4 against the Mets. The hot streak continued with a 6-4 win over the Marlins in the opening game of this series on Monday. Max Scherzer (1-3, 1.26 ERA) will get the start for the Nationals, and will hope to finally start getting the W’s that his solid pitching efforts have warranted. There was no team hotter than the Miami Marlins (12-14) a couple of games back, as they were on a stretch where they won 9 of 10 games. The wheels have come off a little, and they have now lost 2 straight. They looked as though they had Game 1 of this series in the bag, as they sent ace closer Bryan Morris to the mound with a 4-2 lead. Morris took the loss while recording his first blown save of the season, which had to be a bitter pill to swallow for this Marlins squad. Miami will be looking to get back to the form that allowed them to sweep the Nationals in their last meeting, and they will send Tom Koehler (2-2, 4.67 ERA) to the mound as they try to get the win on Wednesday. Koehler only managed 5 innings in a no decision last time out, but he did pitch a gem in the outing before that one.
