You may have to go all the way back to the 2000 World Series to find a Subway Series that is as important as the one coming up this weekend. Both New York ball clubs are currently holding on to a playoff position, but both would rather be in much better shape. Game 1 of the series between the Yankees and the Mets is set for Friday night. The Yankees (80-65) hopes of winning the AL East took a serious body blow last weekend when they lot 3 of 4 to the Toronto Blue Jays, and on home field no less. The Yankees now find themselves 3 games behind the Jays, although they are in what appears to be a pretty comfortable spot in the Wild Card. Given that this team really wasn’t given much hope of making the playoffs at all this season, you would think that they would be happy with their lot, but the fact of the matter is that a lot can go wrong in a single game playoff. The Yankees have some injury issues to contend with as they come down the stretch, but seem to be fighting through them if the series win over the Tampa Bay Rays is any indication. Masahiro Tanaka (12-6, 3.40 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees.
If you had to select just a single word to describe the New York Mets (83-63) this season, it might well be untrustworthy. Every time it looks as though they are about to seal up the division title, they turn around and do something to make their fan base nervous again. It looked as though the division was done when they swept the Washington Nationals to take a 9.5 game lead, but losing 2 of 3 to the awful Miami Marlins has seen that lead cut by 2. Another flub against their cross city rivals this weekend and you might well be looking at a division that suddenly got very interesting again. The Mets have a pretty favorable schedule the rest of the way, and will be hoping that the season ending series against the Nationals doesn’t become a winner takes all affair. Steven Matz (3-0, 1.88 ERA) has been lights out in his 4 starts for the Mets so far this season.
