The margin of error for teams in the playoff race at this stage of the season is incredibly small. A series loss can take you out of a postseason spit just as easily as a win can help you open up a bigger lead. The Texas Rangers are a team that currently hold the final Wild Card spot, but who also have a shot at division glory. They will try to improve their position when they welcome the Oakland A’s to Minute Maid Park on Friday. The Rangers are favorites on MLB lines for the match.

Things really couldn’t be any tighter in the AL playoff race, especially as far as the Texas Rangers (73-65) are concerned. They are in the rather odd position of having to look forward and behind at this point. They are just 2 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West, and hold a slender 1.5 game lead in the final spot in the Wild Card.

They would, of course, much sooner skip the Wild Card and win the division, and they have a legitimate shot of doing that with the way that the Astros are playing right now. The rangers can actually apply a little more pressure on Thursday afternoon when they close out a series with the Seattle Mariners, which they are currently leading 2 games to 1. Next up is a 10-game home stand, which includes a 4-game series versus the Astros. Colby Lewis (14-8, 4.68 ERA) will be trying to snap a 3-game losing skid when he takes to the mound in this one.

The Rangers may want to take a moment to thank the Oakland A’s (60-80) before this series starts, as the guys from California did Texas a pretty big solid in their last series. Oakland had seen the month of September get off to a brutal start, so it came as a surprise to everyone when they were able to take 2 of 3 from the Houston Astros in their last series. While that was a nice, if somewhat unexpected, win, it does nothing to gloss over the fact that this just isn’t a very good team. There are going to have to be some major changes made if this team hopes to compete in a division that appears to be getting stronger with each passing season. You know that the Astros and Rangers are going to be good again next year, which makes the task at hand for the A’s that much tougher. Jesse Chavez (7-14, 4.17 ERA) will start for Oakland.

You have to go back to June to find the last time these two teams hooked up in Texas. On that occasion, it was the Rangers with the sweep. While it may not be the same result this time around, I do like the Rangers to get the win in this game.
