When a team has been bad for a number of years, they are given a lot of leeway when they start to show signs of improvement. The Pittsburgh Pirates started to turn things around a few years ago, but the natives are starting to get restless, as the expectation is now that they should be doing more than just making the playoffs. They will get the chance to continue their good run of form when they head to Cincinnati for a 4-game series on Thursday. Also, be sure to check for more sports betting odds by clicking here.

You have to give a lot of credit to the Pirates (58-41) for how well they have been able to hang with the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. It is something of a thankless task, given how dominant the Cards have been, yet the Pirates still find themselves within striking distance at this stage of the season. They did lose some of the ground they had made up when they came into the second half and dropped 5 of their first 6 games.
They have turned that around, though, as they have won 4 of 5, including a very impressive series win over the Washington Nationals. Where the Pirates will need to improve is on the road, as they are a game under .500 away from the cozy confines of PNC Park. Jeff Locke (5-6. 4.15 ERA) will take to the mound for the Pirates. Locke is winless in his last 3 starts, and will want to get back in the win column.
It looked for the longest time as though the Milwaukee Brewers would finish last in the NL Central, but they have surged at the same time as the Cincinnati Reds (44-54) have slumped, which has resulted in the cellar door now sitting wide open. The Reds are already starting to look ahead, as they shipped out ace pitcher Johnny Cueto earlier in the week. You get the sense that this is just the beginning of the house cleaning, and you can bet that teams will be knocking down their door to enquire about what it will take to get their hands on Joey Votto. David Holmberg will get his first start of the season against the Pirates on Thursday.

The Cincinnati Reds have been surprisingly good against the Pirates this season, going 7-2 so far. It’s tough to see them maintaining that, though, and I like Pittsburgh to get the win here.
