Padres vs Dodgers MLB Week 18 Odds & Game Analysis

Written by on August 1, 2019

As is always the case the day after the trade deadline in the MLB, we have a lost of teams that we are looking at as either winners or losers in the trade war. The general consensus would appear to be that the Houston Astros are the big winners, as they have clearly signaled their intent by going out and improving their starting rotation with the acquisition of Zach Greinke. The final results of all the trades will not really be fully known until we reach the end of this season.

One team that might well be considered a loser at the trade deadline is the LA Dodgers, as they did not make a move for the bullpen help that most people believe they need if they are to go out and get to the World Series for the 3rd straight season. LA is still in great shape, though, and will welcome in the San Diego Padres on Thursday night to kick off a 4-game weekend series. The Dodgers are favored by 1 ½, with the run total set at 7 ½.

Why bet on the San Diego Padres?

The San Diego Padres made some big moves during the offseason and started the regular season looking as though they might be up for the fight in the NL West. Their battle did not last long, though, as they have slowly but surely lost ground to the leaders and are now sitting at a rather disappointing 50-57 on the season. While they are certainly not getting anywhere near the Dodgers at the top, there is still hope in the Wild Card race, albeit extremely slim hope.

As it stands at the moment, the Padres are 6 ½ games out of the final WC spot, with a lot of teams sitting ahead of them and playing better ball. San Diego is 4-6 in their last 10, but they did sweep the Dodgers in 3 games in their last LA trip. They will have Joey Lucchesi (7-5, 4.12 ERA) on the mound for this one.

Why bet on the LA Dodgers?

While there are certainly some concerns about the Dodgers bullpen and their seeming unwillingness to make a change at the trade deadline, you can’t really say that it has hurt them to this point in the season. The Dodgers are the only team in the league to have posted more than 70 wins on the season and they basically have the NL West all tied up and won. The Dodgers have been particularly tough to beat at home, going 40-14 at Dodger Stadium this season, although they did lose 3 in a row to the Padres the last time San Diego was in town. Despite those losses, the Dodgers are still 5-4 versus the Padres in the regular-season series. It will be Clayton Kershaw (9-2, 2.85 ERA) on the mound here.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for Padres vs Dodgers

While it was the Padres who looked great the last time they were in LA, I just don’t see a repeat of that performance. I am on the Dodgers to win and cover on Thursday night.
