If you want to have a good season that ends with a trip to the postseason, there has to be a pretty solid level of consistency that runs from start to finish. Yes, every team is going to have the occasional losing streak mixed in there, but it’s the teams that can minimize those that tend to rise to the top. The Pittsburgh Pirates finally seem to have found that consistency, while the Detroit Tigers still struggle with it. These two will hook up for a 3-game series in Detroit MLB betting, with the second game set for Wednesday night.

Time: Wednesday, 7:08 p.m. ET
Venue: Comerica Park, Detroit
National TV: none
Opening line: Tigers -116, Pirates +106 (8)

The Pittsburgh Pirates (42-33) are coming off one of those little down streaks, but they have done well to play themselves back into contention after a pretty shaky start to the season. Having Andrew McCutchen back at full fitness certainly helps their cause. If there is one flaw in the Pirates set-up this season, it might be their play on defense, especially at the first base position. Pedro Alvarez has not been having a very good season on offense or defense, and this may be a position that the Pirates might look to strengthen once the trade deadline rolls around. They are currently 9 games out of first, but that number doesn’t seem quite so bad when you realize that they are trailing the St. Louis Cardinals, who have been virtually unbeatable this year. The Pirates will hand the ball to A.J. Burnett (6-3, 2.01) on Wednesday, and will be looking for him to get back on track after 4 consecutive shaky starts.

The Detroit Tigers (39-36) are not a team that springs to mind when you talk about consistency. Every time it looks as though they are about to go on a run after beating a contender, they turn around and stink the joint up against teams that you would ordinarily expect them to beat. They are coming into this series having just taken back to back games off the freefalling Chicago White Sox, but their 5-5 record in the past 10 games suggests that they might have a tough time building on that modest little win streak. They are currently 6 games back of the high flying Royals in the AL Central, but have a chance to move above the Twins and into second spot with a good performance in this series. Alfredo Simon (7-4, 3.57 ERA) will get the start for the Tigers on Wednesday, and will be looking to improve on his previous two outings where he was hit very hard.

Consider This Before Betting

This game features a pair of pitchers who are going through a bit of a rough patch, but to me, it’s Burnett that seems the most likely to snap out of it. That’s why I like the Pirates to win this one.
