The standings in the NL are really beginning to take shape, and it looks as though the majority of playoff spots are pretty much in the bag. Now is not the time to rest on your laurels, though, which is why the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets will be determined to get the upper hand in their 3-game series in the Big Apple. The second game of that all-important baseball betting series will go on Saturday night.

Inside Look at the Pittsburgh Pirates vs New York Mets MLB Betting Lines Pick & TV Info

Date/Time: Saturday, August 15th, 7:10 PM
Venue: Citi Field, Flushing, NY
Radio: KDKA-FM 93.7
Opening Line: New York Mets -113

The New York Mets (63-52) have hit a hot streak at just the right time, and have been able to seize control of the NL East in the process. Thy have gone an impressive 8-2 in their last 10 games, and have now opened up a 4.5 game lead on the Washington Nationals. They come into this one on a 4-game win streak after sweeping the Colorado Rockies. Sure, they have not been playing very good teams of late, but all of those wins are still incredibly important. The Mets have been getting solid pitching from their starting rotation all year, but now they are flashing some real offensive power to go along with that. They scored 23 runs in the 4 games against the Rockies whilst only giving up 5. They are going to win a lot of games down the stretch of they can maintain that balance. Jonathon Niese (7-9, 3.46 ERA) will take to the mound as he tries to build on his 2-game winning streak.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (66-46) have the misfortune of playing in the same division as the St. Louis Cardinals, who have been totally dominant this year. To put things in perspective, the Pirates would be leading any other division, other than their own and the AL Central, with the record that they currently have. They have a pretty comfortable 6-game cushion in the Wild Card race, and look as though they are going to be a shoe-in for postseason action. Despite all of this, things are not all rosy in the Steel City. The Pirates have not been very good defensively of late, but have been bailed out numerous times by their great offense. They are going to have to find a better balance if they want to make a deep run this year. Charlie Morton (7-4, 4.48 ERA) will start for the Pirates on Saturday. Pittsburgh has won the last three games with Morton as the starter.

Key Betting Trends

  • Pittsburgh is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing NY Mets
  • The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Pittsburgh’s last 14 games when playing NY Mets
  • NY Mets is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
  • NY Mets is 11-2 SU in its last 13 games

This is definitely a series worth tuning into this weekend, as both teams can go a long way towards solidifying their playoff hopes. The Mets are looking pretty close to unbeatable right now, and that is why I think they will get the win here.
