Pittsburgh vs St. Louis MLB Betting Lines Analysis

There are a lot of very good teams who have made their mark at home this season, but who have struggled on the road. The Pittsburgh Pirates may not be as shoddy on the road as the Dodgers or Mets, but it is their not so great record away from home that has them doing the chasing in their division race. The will be on the road again this weekend, when they play the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-game MLB online betting series starting on Friday.

Date: Friday, September 04, 2015
Time: 8:10PM
Venue: Busch Stadium
Opening Line: Cardinals -140

The Pirates (79-52) are just 2 games over .500 on the road, but are in danger of falling below that mark if they continue this trip the way it began. They have lost the first 2 games in their series against the lowly Milwaukee Brewers, and will have to tighten up defensively if they are to avoid the sweep on Thursday night. The Pirates have given up 16 runs in those games, and now have a losing streak that has been extended to 3 games.

Give that the other loss in the run was against the Colorado Rockies, you can understand why not might not be the best time to face a team as hot as the St. Louis Cardinals. Pittsburgh are 6 games behind the Cards in the Central, and a loss in this series might well be the final nail in their division title coffin. J.A. Happ (7-7, 4.10 ERA) will be on the mound, and will be looking to make it 4 wins in a row.

The St. Louis Cardinals (86-47) has what looked a pretty tough couple of series over the past week, but they simply made it all look as easy as it has all year. The played the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals, and managed to come out with a 4-2 record. During the course of those 6 games, the Cards delivered 36 runs, thanks in large part to the play of rookie slugger Stephen Piscotty. It has been this sort of performance that has driven the Cardinals forward this year, as every guy who has been asked to step and in and replace an injured starter has done so in some real style. If the Cardinals can come out with the win in this series, I really don’t see them ever giving up that division lead. Carlos Martinez (13-6, 2.91 ERA) will get the start for St. Louis.

Happ has been playing well for the Pirates of late, but this is a very tough task for him, especially with how well St. Louis are hitting. A close one, but I think a win for the Cardinals.
