The reigning champions are in trouble, but they still have some time left to dig themselves out of a hole. The Giants (69-62) are now 4.5 games back of the Dodgers in the West, and are seemingly losing more ground with every passing game. In fairness to San Francisco, they had what was arguably the toughest August schedule of any team in baseball.
Things get decidedly easier this month, but they still have to find a way to get back to winning once again. That is hard to do with an offense that is struggling as badly as the Giants are right now. The addition of Marlon Byrd was a good move, as he is .321 with 14 RBI over the last 7 games. They need more from the rest of the hitters, though, if they are to get back in this race. Mike Leake (9-6, 3.53 ERA) is still looking for his first win in a Giants uniform, and Wednesday would be the ideal time to get it.
Watching the LA Dodgers (73-57) has been a lot like watching two different teams, with their performances very much dependent upon where they are playing. In the cozy confines of Dodger Stadium, LA has put together a very solid 45-21 record. Things are not so great on the road, though, as the Dodgers seem to struggle in every facet of the game. They are 8 games under .500 away from home, and it is that which might eventually be their downfall this season. Once this series is over, LA has to go out on the road for a 10-game trip. If their away trend continues, they might allow the Giants back into things even with a series win in this one. They also have 4 games in San Francisco to come before the season ends, so let’s not call this division race over just yet. Clayton Kershaw (11-6, 2.24 ERA) will be on the mound for the Dodgers.
