St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates Online MLB Lines

The NL playoff teams have essentially all been decided, but there is still some jockeying for position to be done before the regular season comes to a close. The biggest question mark at the moment may be in the NL Central, where the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates both still have a shot at landing the division title. Those two teams will meet in a crucial 3-game series, the second game of which is set for Tuesday in Pittsburgh with no real favorite on MLB odds to take the match.

The Cardinals (98-58) still have to be considered the favorites to win the division, as they have a 3-game lead, and only have to face the Atlanta Braves after this one. They will be taking nothing for granted, though, as they are well aware that things don’t always go as planned when facing lesser teams. After all, they could well have had the division pretty much locked up if they hadn’t split a 4-game series with the lowly Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. The Cardinals will not be looking ahead, though, as they are well aware of the importance of this series. If they were to be swept by the Pirates, we would be in for a nail-biting finish next weekend. Michael Wacha (17-6, 3.15 ERA) will get the start for the Cardinals.

The Pirates (95-61) came ever so close to putting together a perfect record last week, and it was only a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday that prevented them from pulling it off. Even with that loss, the Pirates are still a very impressive 8-2 in their last 10 games, and it almost seems unfair that they may be forced to go the Wild Card route after what has been a magnificent season. The fact that they may have to do that speaks volumes to the strength of their division, especially when you consider that that Chicago Cubs will be the other team in the NL Wild Card game. The Pirates really need to go perfect this week if they are to steal the division from the Cardinals, which may well be just too much to ask. Charlie Morton (9-8, 4.54 ERA) will be on the mound for the Pirates.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

As fun as it would be to see this division battle go down to the wire, I just don’t think it will happen. I like the Cardinals to get a very important win in this game.
