Take Division Leading Rangers Over A’s On Thursday MLB Lines

The length of the baseball season makes it pretty forgiving for those teams who do not get off to a particularly great start. The fact of the matter is that if you can do enough to stay in touch with the division leader, you can make a move in the final couple of months that changes your year entirely. There is no better example of that than the Texas rangers this season. They will try to edge closer to a division title when they face the Oakland A’s on the road on Thursday where the Rangers are favorites on MLB lines.

Since the trade deadline, the Rangers (81-69) have racked up over 30 wins, and have taken over sole possession of the AL West, which they now lead by 2 games. It’s a dramatic turnaround that not a lot of people saw coming. Even when they were active at the deadline, there was always the sense that the moves they were making were to bolster their squad for next season. A Wild Card spot would have been considered a very nice bonus this year, but a division win would be an absolute dream come true. That division title might very well be decided later this week, when Texas and the Houston Astros clash for the final time in the regular season. The Rangers have a 12-4 record against their division rivals this season, so confidence must be high. Cole Hamels (10-8, 3.67 ERA) has been brilliant since coming over from Philadelphia, and has gone unbeaten in his last 8 starts.

It goes without saying that it has been a rough year for the Oakland A’s (64-87), but let’s add a little perspective to how bad. Their winning percentage heading into this week was at .427, which, if they maintained it, would be the worst season performance by the team since 1997. Looking at the remaining games on their schedule would suggest that the percentage may actually get worse, as they have some rather tough opponents on the horizon in the next couple of weeks. After losing the opening game of this series on Monday, the A’s have now lost 3 straight, and are giving up a lot of runs in the process. Other than Sonny Gray, this is a pitching staff that isn’t pulling its weight. Chris Bassitt (1-6, 2.82 ERA) has suffered from a stunning lack of run support in his starts this season.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

The Rangers look determined to hold onto that division lead, which means taking care of the teams that they really should beat. I believe they will do just that on Thursday afternoon.
