The general rule of thumb as MLB betting fans might know is that it’s great pitching that usually takes a team to the playoffs. That said, if you don’t put any runs on the board, no amount of solid pitching efforts are going to be enough to bail you out. This is something that the Tampa Bay Rays are finding out the hard way, as it now looks as though they will miss the playoffs for the second straight year. They will play the final of 3 games in Detroit on Wednesday.

The fact that the Rays (67-70) are the lowest scoring team in the American League tells you all you need to know about why they are likely going to miss out on that final Wild Card spot. Ironically enough, they have been scoring at a better rate in the past couple of weeks, but their pitching has gone off the rails at the same time. They have not been able to do anything to close the gap on the Texas Rangers for that final playoff spot, and now find themselves 5.5 games out of it with time rapidly running out.

It certainly doesn’t help their cause that they have gone just 4-6 in their last 10, especially when the teams ahead of them are putting together wins. The Rays have a remaining schedule that could see them pick up some wins, but probably not enough to get into postseason action. Jake Odorizzi (6-8, 3.35 ERA) comes into this one having gone winless in his last 7 starts.

While the Detroit Tigers (63-74) can certainly point to injuries as being part of their problem this season, you still have to wonder if this team would have been good enough to compete even if everyone had remained healthy. The unfortunate thing here is that the performance of Miguel Cabrera this season has been somewhat lost amid the poor performances of his surrounding cast.

He is well on the way to having a career year in a number of different offensive areas, but his heroics have simply not been enough to lift a mediocre team out of the AL Central cellar. If they continue to play the way they have been (3-7 in their last 10), the cellar is almost certainly where they will stay. Kyle Lobstein (3-6, 5.02 ERA) will be trying to snap a 4-game losing streak when he takes to the mound on Wednesday.

This is a game where we might get to see some runs, as both pitchers are going through a bit of a rough patch right now. At the end of the day, I think it will be the Rays who do just enough to win.
